I recognize that this goal may not be attainable right off the bat. It will take baby steps to get there. I will first start with a gratitude journal, listing things from throughout the day that brought me joy and that I am thankful for. I will then move on to personalized notes. Because speaking out to people that are not in my immediate friend group is a bit intimidating to me, I feel like stating with notes is a great next step. I can state my gratitude, affirmation or that kind gesture I witnessed and simply put it in their mailbox. When this is more comfortable I can move on to voicing what I witness right when it happens.

I will spend the first couple months of school writing and tracking in my journal. By Thanksgiving I will begin making personalized notes of gratitude to people. By the end of the year, vocalizing my gratitude and what I witness as soon as it happens should be second nature.

Words like , "Wow, you're a natural at this, you're so smart" foster the growth mindset. Whereas words like, "Wow, I can see you worked hard at this , and you didn't give up" foster the growth mindset. My goal for this upcoming year is to be aware and make a conscious effort of communicating to my students in ways that foster a growth mindset.

I will personally reflect on the words and phrases I use in front of students when a mistake is made. Upon reflection, I can begin to understand my emotional response that may be standing in the way of accepting the fact that a mistake was made in the first place. When I do openly make a mistake, I will pause before responding.

It allows people to see that they still have the ability to accomplish the goal instead of feeling stupid or frustrated with their current results. This small word change will allow me to not get frustrated with myself if a project isn’t looking the exact way I imagined. I always try and focus on growth when showing parents test scores or grades, and the word yet is the perfect word to add to when talking about the big picture. Using the word yet will help parents see learning as a process, and that their student doesn’t need to master these skills until the end of kindergarten.

The charts will be posted in my room the first day of school. I want this to become a natural way of giving feedback by the 1st quarter of the school year. I know it will be something I will have to work on because I've spent years praising talent and hard work, but now want to focus on the effort part that students show.

I am going to work on praising students for the process and not solely focusing on the outcome. I want to give students feedback based on their efforts and not telling them they are so smart because that is not helping aid in developing a growth mindset.

This is important because praising the process helps students learn that it is important to work hard even when things get hard or challenging and that their work ethic is more important to me as a teacher than them getting all the right answers.

The rest of my teaching career. I believe that it is extremely important to continue to praise students for the process over the product and that is something that I am going to do the rest of my teaching career and hopefully one day when I become a part as well. Instilling in my own child how important their effort is and not worrying so much about the end product.
