No gelo, cada molécula de água forma quatro ligações de hidrogênio, o máximo possível para uma molécula de água, criando uma estrutura de rede regular. Por outro lado, na água líquida em temperatura ambiente e pressão atmosférica, cada molécula de água faz uma média de 3,4 ligações de hidrogênio com outras moléculas. Essa rede cristalina regular faz o gelo ser menos denso que a água líquida; portanto, o gelo flutua na água líquida. </div>]]></description>
