The author of the book interrupted the story, saying Alex later tells people he is from South Dakota. He said Alex actually grew up in Annandale, Virginia. Alex lived in an upper middle-class household. His father was an aerospace engineer, and his mother was a businesswoman. Alex attended Emory University in Georgia, which he received multiple awards, and scholarships. When a newspaper wants to put Alex on the news, Alex has refused because fame is meaningless to him. After graduation, Alex has 40000$ in college fund ready to pay for his law school. Not many people would be able to achieve this kind of money. During graduation weekend, he tells his parents, “I think I’m going to disappear for a while.” Fast forward a couple of months, Alex's parents haven't heard a word from him. They worried and decided to drive to Alex apartment near his law school in Atlanta. The apartment was empty. Alex has already packed up his things and begun his journey. He has donated all his money for law school to charity. Somewhere in the wild, Alex no longer used his real name, he called himself “Alexander Supertramp.”

Analysis chapter 3:
When Alex meets Wayne Westerberg for the first time, he has properly already on his journey for a while. The first part of chapter 3 is to explain why Alex would tell other people he met later in the story that South Dakota is his hometown. Now that the reader know Alex has two places, he considers his home which is his real home and Wayne Westerberg store. Then the author used this detail to give reader information about who is Alex, and how he has started his journey. The author makes readers curious about the next chapter because they don't know what will chapter 4 about. The book could start the journey all over by Alex meeting Jim Gallien in the first place or story can be continue after Alex left South Dakota. Apparently, Alex was living some people dreams. He is a man with such high education, he could buy a new car for himself. However, what could have been his motivation to left everything behind and go into the wild is still a mystery. I think that Alex would have survive longer, and his parents would have found him if Westerberg didn't get into jail.

The first part of chapter 4 is to explain what has happened to Alex's car. Alex decided to leave his car because if he called for help, he knows people would question what about the car like why his car doesn't have insurance. Not to mention, they may ask about the gun he was carrying, and his identity. Eventually, they will ask what he has been up to and call his family. Then he would have to do a bunch of paperwork and turn in a fee to pull up his car. He knows he would not be free by the government and their rules. Even though Alex was a law student, he showed that he hates the government and their rules. Ironically, Alex's car later works for the government in drugs investigation.
The second part of chapter 4, the story continues when Alex has left South Dakota. He has made new friends which are Jan Burres and Bob. Alex would make friend with anyone he met on the journey, even Mexican people. This show that Alex is happing of his life because he is more free, more independent than he was ever. Alex's parents’ struggle to find him has given the reader an idea that he has succeeded in finding the perfect independence. Whenever he faced a difficulty, the reader can feel his excitement, and his high hope to survive. When he was caught in a nature disaster on the sea, he would curse a lot. Despite that, he still able to keep a cold head, and never lose his high hope for survive.

Analysis chapter 5:
Through this chapter, we have seen Alex friendliness and hostility. He would become friend with whoever he met in the Slab. However, this chapter posed a dangerous foreshadowing. When Jan Burres, and her boyfriend Bob met Alex again, Burres describe Alex as he was incredibly hungry. Later, Alex rejects supplies offered him by Burres when he leaves the couple. Way before that, we know that Alex would reject aid from his family when they want to buy him a new car. Alex insistence on independence would lead him to disaster or at least unnecessary hardship in the future. His hunger, relentless even while he is still living in civilization, reminds the reader of what they already know that Alex will eventually die of starvation.

As a person, I understand what Alex must has been through. Alex mention that his parents always demanding, controlling him, which is a sign of bad parents. Those parents would put priority on their needs over that of their children. They would never learn to love their child unconditionally. At home, I often get called out at useless. My parents weren't happy because I'm 17 years old which is able to go to work but doesn't make any money for the family. My stepfather would yelling and blaming me at everything that doesn't fit his eyes. I don't why he is always being so harsh and aggressive. I knows that he might be stress from work, but that is not an excuse to treat his son like that. Listening to my stepfather every single night sometime make me unable to focus on school. I usually stay silent and only response with "I will fixed it". Despite that, it seems like whatever I'm trying to do can't make him happy. Gradually, I has realize that I became much more afraid to communicate, the thing that I was always good at. Nowadays whenever I want to said something, I feels much better writing it down rather than talk about it. At night all I can think about before going to sleep is why I'm I so unlucky, why people doesn't like working with me, why I feel so useless, and why I can't make stepfather proud. Similar to Alex, I also have a little sister. I would protected her by taking all the blame on me. My mom wanted me to go to college, find a job, and then make lots of money as the first generation going to college. Life in the US was not as I was intended. House is expensive, millions of people are in debt, even education is expensive. Of course there are people living a comfortable live, but there are also people who haven't figure out what they are going to eat tomorrow. Unlike Alex who chose to run away, for now I decided to focus on myself. However, I have been planning about run away multiple time in the future. When I'm 18, I wanted to go somewhere far away not my home just like Alex. I'm more concern that I would end up like Alex. What if I'm become a homeless? When I'm a homeless, I knows that my friends would try to stay away from me, no one would accept me, society would look at me and decided not to give me a chance to rebuild my character. At that moment I would rather die on the street than to see my parents again because hearing them yell at me again would be a torture worst that death. I bet Alex feels the same way that's why he didn't contact his family when he was starving. In the future, I wanted to make a shelter for the homeless. It raise me a question, has this been a national problem? Are there other children like me and Alex who are planning to give up education and run away from home even thought they did extremely well in high school? For now, I would not give up on education and continue to rooting for American dream. When I get older, if I ever get a child, I must raise them different. I would think carefully before said something to my child because I want to make sure I wouldn't hurt them with my words. There are always part of me that was hurt and hated my stepfather. But at the end of the day, he is my father so I can't hate him forever.

Analysis chapter 9:  
By far the author has used four men to unravel the mystery of Alex psychology. Everett is the person who has a similar background with Alex the most. Both of them were introduced as intelligent. Both of them has family conflict as a result left their home. Both of them has been driven to live in nature. With that being said, nature is not always nice sometimes. It is beautiful, but deadly. There are diseases, natural disaster, predators, dangerous plants and animals. Why on Earth these man would decide to live in the wild? They might has burned out. They realized they can't live to the expectation of people around them, and the expectation they have for themselves. All of the man we have heard have one thing in common. They are running away from something, whether it is stress from work, family conflicts, or dark side of society. They were running away, hoping to start a new life. These are time when men become most vulnerable and what they need were supports from people around them. They were unlucky that no one was there to realize what they been through, and what they are struggling. A man who loses confident in himself would lose all of his battle. That is when tragedy start coming to them. These story shows that running away is clearly not the answers. So, what the answer could be? What men should do in those difficult time?

The author visited Walt McCandless, who is a jet propulsion engineer used to work for NASA, have his own business, and certainly Alex's father. Unlike his son who went into the wild, after college Walt went to work in jet propulsion after the launch of Sputnik pushed the United States to pursue space exploration. The Sputnik is an event when the US would invest billions of dollars into space exploration. To people like Walt, it was a great opportunity to get rich. At such a young age, Walt was married, and financially successful. However, the relationship with his first wife eventually fell apart. He then meets Billie, a receptionist who worked at the science park where Walt McCandless was employed. Apparently, Billie is Alex's mother. Billie and Walt worked together to build a satellite system consulting company. They made lots of money together, but they would leave Alex and his sister at home by themselves all the time. They would fight at home sometimes but that has led to closeness between Alex and his sister. Alex and his sister can only depend on each other. Walt knew there were some tensions in the family so once in a while he would take the family out for hiking, camping, and climbing. This could be the reason Alex feel in love for nature. Talking about Alex, he knew the boy was special. Alex showed extreme determination to succeed in every task he undertook. However, his father said Alex is very stubborn. Despite getting all A, Alex has failed a class which is physic. Walt came to ask Alex teacher why to fail his son. The teacher said he had this specific format that he wanted every student so the assignment can be grade fast, precisely, and easy. But Alex is the only student who don't like following it. Walt tells Alex he deserves that grade. When practice baseball, Alex would not follow anyone technique. He would swing around a couple of time to see what his best standing position would be on that day. He would perfect that position, but he doesn't work on other position that he was weak on. In tournament, the other team would realize Alex weakness, start throwing at Alex weak point led him to lose the game. Despite that, Alex is always serious about winning, he would push himself to practice real hard. When Alex in junior high school, he joined Track and Field. Every time he loses to someone in the tournament or just the practice, he would rather not talk about it, go somewhere by himself and torture his body. Alex high school said he would talk about things like government, politician, laws, homeless, pollution led them to argue all the time. For some reason, Alex has this strong sympathy for homeless people. He would use the money he makes to feed homeless people every night. Even invite his friends to help him even when they found it not very fun and scary. Alex would let a homeless person to secretly live in his home. Where did he get the money? Interestingly, Alex gains extraordinary success working as a manager for a construction firm in high school. The company called Walt, offer to pays full college fees for Alex if he would not go to other state and continue working part time for time for them. Alex declines the offer right away, said he planning to pursuit college education in other state, but his family doesn't know the real purpose is for him to distance himself from his family.

Analysis chapter 11:
In this chapter, we can see that Alex and his sister doesn't receive lots of support from their parents. Like when he receives a bad grade from Physic, his father doesn't explain to him why sometimes we have to follow other people rules, instead said the boy deserve that F. And their parents would often fight each other. Despite that, looks like Alex already achieved some success for himself, making good money despite haven't go to college. Seems like Alex was very independent, he would not rely on anyone other than himself. He doesn't like being tell what to do by adults. It could be because his dad didn't spend much time with him when he was a kid. Alex shows that he hated any arbitrary rules that one person forcing other people to follow. He has an open minded. He would say whatever he thinks is right, complain whatever he thinks is wrong. Alex was a deep thinker at a young age. He has started to think about the government and laws while other kids were just start thinking about dating. Alex has a kind heart and strong empathize, he can imagine what other people live could be like. However, Alex could be the person disappointed and judging himself the most. To be a better version of himself could have been his motivation. But after college, he has realized all the things he doing this time is to please his family, one that didn't even care about him. In his mind, he might has told himself that he doesn't need his parents since high school. At the end of the day, Alex stops following his parents, but he now confused about life. Later on, he may has realized life is about experiment, see as many things as possible because nature would always keep it beauty. This chapter shows us how parents have a big impact on a kid personality and thinking.

Analysis chapter 15:
As a part of his effort to convince the reader of Alex’s death as meaningful, the author dives into an examination of his relationship with his own father. He bucked parental expectation only to realize that he was not happy at all. The author decided to climb The Devil Thumb to prove to his father that he is independent and can make great achievement by himself. However, in the end, despite has risking his life, no one care about his journey. The author realizes it is foolish to try to get his father attention like that. Because when he death, his life would be pointless and there are lots of people would be sad like his mother. The fractured relationships with his father, operating as a continuous trauma is the motivation for his desire for solitude and risk-taking behavior. The story may have explained why Alex decided to leave his home.

The author finally steps into the places where Alex spent his last days and reviews the mistakes that led, one after another, to his death. Despite Alex has survivor for months in the wild, not bringing a map, and not know how to store food properly are ultimately some of the mistakes that led to his death. The author was able to experiment joyfulness just like Alex when he discovered the bus. Many of Alex's belongings were still strewn around the bus, creating an intimate, warm atmosphere in the middle of the cold Alaska weather. Even though Alex passed away by himself, nowadays he is not alone at all. It can be seen that many people came to visit him regularly, many people respect his death, maybe Alex ending wasn't all about tragic.
