I found this matchbook with an interesting and nostalgic type pairing of script, sand serifs, and a large, slab serif display. A lot going on but I do think it's nice to look at! Definitely kerning issues like in "TAP" and "HOTEL" but "La Salle" looks nice, except for the S.

These letters are so beautiful with the high contrast in strokes. The counters are very long and compressed in the 0's and 8's and 9's. These are all from serif families.

Tote bag script! Beautiful to me, but weird format in terms of leading and location on the tote (not even centered?). The S really draws me in and the descender of the L!

A type combination from a vintage post card pre-1970s! It has a display serif, combined with a more humanist sans serif that looks oddly extended. I do like how they are combined, just because Vices is super exaggerated, but since it's already bigger, the more dramatic font choice is sort of unnecessary.

Extended sans serif on an old post card. It also looks like it isn't supposed to be like that and someone stretched it out. Very geometric! I find it interesting that the ascender of the h is taller than the t's.

I found this sign at the Plaza in Atlanta that is so nostalgic, and has definitely been on the door for decades. It looks very art deco, especially with the large counters in the O and the hollowed effect on the strokes. Super long descenders and ascenders!

Bold sans serif on a little paper that held silverware. Kerning is pretty good, and higher cap height with this one, where it almost looks condensed.

This type find contains a large sans serif within a book of type. To me, this looks like a geometric sans serif, especially seen in the O. I think the spacing works out really well on this sample as well.

A type combination from the special collections library. This was created with a letterpress and most likely woodcuts for the title in a large, compressed, low contrast sans serif. It is definitely imperfect and there are spacing issues. It is paired with a modern serif, with very high contrast.

Another poster from the Special Collections library. It features a huge display woodcut slab serif as the title, and a thicker slab serif underneath. There is modern serif beneath it, with super high contrast, but without much leading between it and the larger text above. Oddly, there is sans serif which was very rare during this time. Overall, there is so much going on with so many combinations.

special character

the "/" mark is rigged from an "L," which makes the 1/2 symbol a special character, as it marks time. In the original poster, this character was used to mark time— ie. 7:30 being 7 1/2.

This type find is a large, display slab serif with a pink background behind it. The serifs on this title are very big, with floral characters decorating the corners. I was most drawn to the 'A' on the second line, as it definitely needs to be kerned in to the left. Egyptian slab serif!

Example of new sans serif from 1869, super early on. Looks to be really tight in my opinion and could benefit from being spaced out more due to being in all caps.

Special character, currency symbol, 1812. This special character was featured with a serif which was poorly printed, likely with letter press. you can see the contrast of thick and thin strokes within the form.

This type find contains a bold, modern display in the center, which really caught my eye. There is a high contrast between the thin strokes and bold strokes. Also, there needs to be some kerning where the 'O' is next to the 'N.' I think also the dark green is striking, especially in contrast to the smaller text above it.

This type find contains transitional serifs, and a lot of spacing between the letters. There is also imperfections within the I, and the 'M' in "Giacomo" needs to be kerned in to the left quite a bit. A lot of the serifs in this find are wonky!

modern, condensed

This type find contains special characters, such as the paragraph symbols, as well as discretionary ligatures between the 'c' and the 't.' This is a modern type find that is slightly condensed. Plus, you can see the double spacing after the period, which is not common in modern times.

This was on the box of a candle I was gifted. It is a sans serif, but looks back to letter press and wood cut type, especially with the texture created in the A.

This is a type combination I found on a box in an antique store for a toy, with a strange scripty font with "little" and a bolded serif with "dog" and sans serif on the rest. Plus, there is lots of combination regarding the color.

A custom sign painted for a store in North Carolina. There are very small counters and angled cross bars, with uneven spacing. The shoulders of the n's are very flat, and the thickness varies depending on the painter's stroke.

This is a 3D type find from the Elberton Fair. This was on the side of a huge stand selling candy apples and drinks and all the like. The type has a strange 3D effect to the "ice cold" to make it look like ice cubes— super tacky— and western, slab serif displays for the rest. Super tight, not much spacing or leading at all.

Literal 3D type find from the fair! Weird combo of a serif "I" and sans serif Z, P, E, AND R? Also some lights are out so it gives it a much different effect. The strokes are low contrast as they are all two lights wide. Also really curved with some kerning issues next to the P and E!

Wooden sign type-find in North Carolina. It looks like Helvetica. Very low contrast strokes, sans serif. The letters are carved out of the wood, giving it a hollowed-out effect. The spacing is pretty good I think, and the vertical text is useful here because Menu is not a long word.

Another wooden sign! The letters were protruding from the wooden background. It has a scripty but sans serif look, with a symbol in the middle of the O. Very tightly spaced, especially the S at the end. I find it weird that the E and H crossbar are higher than the A's by a very significant amount.

Serif found at the fair! So weird that the "C" is bigger than the rest, like literally a larger point size. Contrast of thick and then strokes, with thick brackets.

I found this in an old magazine. This is a hand drawn type find, to give it a more friendly and approachable feeling (and to add a humor element). It is a bold sand serif but is definitely imperfect. There is a high x height!

A type find from a poster in my room. Definitely an experimental script, especially with the waviness of it. The spacing is large, as the letters are not connecting which makes it more inappropriate.

Button pin serif, the P, E, and O in "People" is way too close! Needs more spacing and to be kerned out a little bit if to be even with the preceding line. Also leading is a little too tight, descender of the P is a little too close.

A sign painted for an ice cream shop where my parents live. It is 3D, but I noticed the decorative cross bars quickly and the funky counter forms with swirls. It is a bold serif with higher contrast. It is reminiscent of wood cuts!

Another ampersand! This was on a painted sign, which the viewer can easily tell. It is relatively geometric and is part of a sans serif family. There are flaws with the edges, and the hand-paintedness is evident.

Sign painting I found on the side of a trailer at the fair. There is a western feeling serif display with "cow town USA" accompanied with a sans serif. The USA was definitely also painted strangely with the blue and white.

Modern type find from a poster, but reminiscent of a vintage band poster with the very geometric, thin sans serif. Looks a lot like album covers from the 60's. Very round and geometric, especially the a's, g's, and e's. The s should be kerned in a little bit!

This is a wall/sign painting in downtown Athens rom an old insurance ad. While it is very weathered, the white bold display serif stands out. It was definitely custom done, with the "C" going through the "P." There is also a combination of script and sans serif as well.

A super interesting and bad type combination on the top of my prescription, with a very modern display paired with a more humanist sand serif, which looks like it is supposed to be Helvetica but is super distorted due to mass printing. Lots of kerning issues here!

Ed Fella type find from class. Super experimental, with the varying letterforms like custom hand-drawn ones and more nostalgic examples like the 0's in 4:00 and 1 in 1:00. There are lots of type combinations, like scripts and serifs and sans serifs.

Another experimental type find, but from David Carson. He makes this illegible, but there is a system to it. Lots of different type used, from sans serif to serifs. He utilizes smaller type to create texture in the background.

A pillow case with type from an old bag. Outlined title with funky spacing, and is super right! The descender and the lower serif of the P is nice! The other type on here is a condensed sand serif, and a display that relates to a serif with extended serifs. Also looks like the Trader Joe's font!

This is a page of special characters I designed for the Futura type specimen project. It features a bold and heavy font with symbols like an ampersand, an ö, paragraph symbol, @, an exclamation mark, and more. The characters are very geometric with low contrast in the strokes.
