However, many women and girls still participated in the long-lived fad. Young girls generally had their feet bound between four to seven years of age. Typically, it starts with the toenails being clipped and the feet being soaked in either hot water or a concoction of herbs and nuts. The feet are then massaged and doused with alum in order to make it easier for the foot to be manipulated. All of the toes except for the big toe were folded back onto the foot. Every two days, the feet were bound tighter.
