The Sun's Interior

Like Earth, the sun has an interior which has a core, a radiation zone and a convection zone

The core has a diameter of 400000 km, which is 30x Earths diameter. Nuclear fusion takes place in the core. The energy produced in the sun's core goes into the radiation zone. It is the middle layer of the sun. It is a region of packed gas that is so dense. it can take up to 100000 years for the energy to go through. The energy then goes to the convection zone which is the outermost layer.

Cooler gases dont give off as much light as hotter gases, which is why sunspots look darker than the rest of the photosphere
