The 911 call was made by a witness, who approached the taxi cab after seeing it idling at the side of a street. When the woman approached the vehicle, she saw a passed out, half-naked woman in the back seat of Al-Rawi’s car. As the case went on, Al-Rawi ended up being acquitted. This sparked tension in the media, as well as nova Scotia’s Provincial court, as it was found that: “the crown had offered no evidence of lack of consent from the complainant”, as well as other issues with his trial (Thomson, 2018). Judge Gregory Lenehan’s decision was then appealed by the Nova Scotia court of appeal, and the case was ordered a new trail. There were complaints made against Lenehan and his decision as he stated “clearly, a drunk can consent”(CBC 2019). The case is still ongoing. Sexual assault is a more specific kind of assault. It is defined as an assault of a sexual nature that violates the sexual integrity of the victim (Edmonton Police).
