Adab in Knowledge :

In Islam, adab refers to Islamic etiquette that encompasses commendable character and manners. It involves traits like trustworthiness, integrity, responsibility, and respect. The concept extends beyond behavior in social settings to include refined conduct in everyday actions, such as dining with politeness and consideration for others.

Education aims not only for intellectual excellence but also personality excellence. Subjects like language studies teach students to communicate with politeness and respect, reflecting the values of adab. Academic success is important for national development, but personality excellence ensures the process is led by individuals with integrity and responsibility. Therefore, parents, teachers, and lecturers must collaborate to nurture well-rounded students who excel both intellectually and in character.

Al-Quran as The Book of Knowledge :

The Quran is the final divine scripture given to Prophet Muhammad as guidance for humanity, following previous books like the Taurat, Zabur, and Injil. While all these texts share the essential truths of Allah’s Oneness and principles of worship, the Quran differs in that it has remained unchanged since its revelation. Unlike earlier scriptures, which were altered by human hands, the Quran has been perfectly preserved without any additions or deletions.

This preservation is attributed to the many chains of transmission, both written and oral, ensuring that no corruption or errors have occurred. It has been memorized and recited by countless individuals worldwide, including those who do not speak Arabic, yet they recite it exactly as it was revealed. The Quran’s protection from change continues to this day and will remain intact forever.

The differences between Islam, Iman and Ihsan ;

Islam :

There are three levels of faith in Islam, the first being Islam itself. To attain this, a person must declare that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad (SAW) is His messenger. This declaration signifies acceptance of Allah's message revealed through the Prophet. After this, it becomes obligatory for a Muslim to observe key practices such as daily prayers, Zakat, fasting during Ramadan, and performing Hajj if physically and financially able. These obligations become easier to follow when one's heart is prepared with Iman (faith).

Iman :

Iman (faith) is the foundation of Islam, acting as the roots of one's religious beliefs. It involves belief in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the scriptures revealed before the Quran. A person with Iman not only believes in Allah’s existence but also in His ability to do anything. A true believer accepts everything Allah has revealed in the Quran, including the belief in the Last Day, or Judgment Day, which emphasizes accountability. This belief motivates individuals to do good for the reward of Paradise and serves as a warning against wrongdoing to avoid Hellfire.

Ihsan :

Ihsan is the highest level of faith in Islam, defined by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as “to worship Allah as if you see Him, and even if you do not see Him, know that He sees you.” It emphasizes the awareness that Allah is always watching, motivating a Muslim to act responsibly and with excellence in everything they do. A person who practices Ihsan, known as a Muhsen, strives to say and do only what pleases Allah, always mindful of His presence and commands.

As Muslims, we must live by Islamic teachings, as they provide a good way to live. To strengthen our Iman, we should regularly perform ibadah like prayer and reciting the Quran. Trusting in the rewards of good deeds helps build Ihsan and steadfastness.

Believing in Allah :

Belief in Allah means recognizing Him as the only true God worthy of worship, the Creator and Sustainer of all. He knows all deeds, both hidden and open, and rewards the righteous while punishing the disobedient. Mankind and jinn were created solely to worship Him.

Malaikat (Angels) :

Malaikat (angels) are spiritual beings created by Allah to carry out specific duties. They always obey Allah's commands and, unlike humans, have no free will to choose between right and wrong. Angels have no fixed physical form and are invisible to the human eye, though they may appear in forms we can comprehend during spiritual visions.

The Kutub (Holy Books) :

The "Books of Allah" are messages of guidance revealed to prophets over time. Muslims believe not only in the Quran but also in these previous revelations. However, all revealed books, except the Quran, were altered and are not preserved in their original form. Muslims' belief in these books refers to the original guidance given to the prophets. Unlike the others, the Quran has remained unchanged, with its teachings considered complete, perfect, and eternal, capable of guiding humanity across all ages.

Prophets :

A prophet is defined as someone who receives divinely inspired revelations, possessing exceptional spiritual and moral insight, and the ability to foretell future events. Essentially, a prophet has a heightened understanding of the present and future, with insights attributed solely to a higher power (God) to guide and share with others.

Hereafter :

The term Akhirah refers to the belief in everlasting life after death. Muslims believe that Allah determines the time of death, and the deceased remain in their graves until the Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Din), when they will be judged based on their actions in life. Faith in the hereafter, including the Day of Judgment, Resurrection, Paradise, and Hell, is one of the six core tenets of a Muslim’s faith.

Qada' and Qadar :

In Islamic terminology, qada signifies perfection and completion, while qadar refers to evaluation and planning. Qadar specifically denotes Allah's decree of all things from eternity, encompassing His knowledge that events will occur at predetermined times and in the specific ways He has willed. Everything happens as intended and in accordance with His creation.

Ihsan :

Ihsan, in essence, is worshiping God as if you can see Him, even though you cannot. The Prophet defined Ihsan as behaving with the awareness that, while we may not see God, He is always watching us. This means that a person embodying Ihsan strives for excellence in everything they do, recognizing that their Master is observing them. To live in a state of Ihsan is to worship and live with a consciousness of God’s presence, responding with love, humility, submission, fear, and hope—emotions that are fitting for the Creator of all worlds.

Ihsan is one of the core principles of Islam, with over 66 verses in the Qur'an addressing it. In truth, the entire Qur'an guides us toward Ihsan, which means excelling in all our actions. It also involves acts of charity, kindness, and goodness.

Ihsan encompasses various aspects. In terms of human relationships, it calls for kindness and goodness towards others, even to those with whom you may differ in matters of faith. You may present your message, but do so without aggression. Beyond human interactions, Ihsan extends to the world around us—plants, animals, and even inanimate objects. We are urged not to waste or misuse anything and to always remain grateful to Allah.

Ultimately, Ihsan is about doing good, because Allah loves those who perform good deeds.

Adab :

Adab refers to spreading peace and mending broken relationships. It involves praying for fellow Muslims, encouraging good, and discouraging evil. Good manners, or Adab, include respecting parents, elders, and neighbors, and showing love to the young. These manners help prevent us from falling into sin.

In Islam, Adab is practiced in various aspects of life—such as being a student, a child, and a neighbor.

As a student, Adab means behaving respectfully, staying focused during lessons, and treating teachers with kindness, regardless of their age.

As children, we should respect and obey our parents, helping them with chores, offering gifts, and praying for their forgiveness.

Lastly, Adab toward neighbors involves treating them with respect, keeping their secrets, and offering help, regardless of whether they are Muslim or non-Muslim.

In conclusion, maintaining Adab in daily life strengthens both faith and relationships, earning the love of Allah and others around us.

Nature and Environment :

Nature and the environment are all around us, but much of it has been destroyed by humans for development. We must appreciate and protect what remains.

How can we improve our environment?

One way is to connect with people who share your passion for the environment. Joining local or online environmental groups, participating in activities like tree planting or conservation workshops, and being part of eco-friendly events can deepen your commitment and create a supportive network for positive change.

Additionally, Islam teaches that protecting the environment is a religious duty. Allah has created nature, and Muslims are responsible for conserving it and avoiding corruption on Earth.

For this semester's Usrah session, I wish that we all grow closer to Allah and strengthen our bonds as a community. May we gain valuable insights, foster kindness, and leave with hearts filled with gratitude and wisdom. Let this journey be a reminder of the importance of faith, good character, and supporting one another in all aspects of life.
