In the beginning, Miley says, "We were good, we were gold/ Kinda dream that can't be sold." These two lines might give the listener an initial feeling of happiness until they realize Miley is talking in the past tense. With understanding the background of the song and observing the use of past tense, these lines give a feeling of disappointment and almost regret. Miley seems to look back on the relationship and view it as a perfect image even though she knows how it will end. The tone she uses while singing these lyrics almost reminds me of someone that is dwelling on the past. Miley will later repeat the line "I can buy myself flowers" which gives a feeling of self-empowerment. She no longer needs him to do simple things like buying her flowers when she can do it herself. She goes on listing different things she can do on her own and then ends the chorus with "I can love me better than you can." An example of this is the line "Built a home and watched it burn" which references Miley and Liam's Malibu house that burned down in 2018 (Veloso). It is said that the fire played a big role in their decision to get married (Donaldson). These lyrics not only hint at the real-life burnt house but also their connection together. They took their time in building a relationship together to just watch it fall apart in the end. Another example can be seen in the line "I didn't want to lie". Miley is known to be very open and truthful with her followers. She has even said people can call her many things but a liar is not one of them (Veloso). You could also argue that Miley is the audience herself; however, I feel that Liam is the more obvious choice. The song serves a purpose to not only throw shade at Miley's ex-husband but to also serve as a self-empowering message. Going off of this, I would say the subject of this song is a combination of self-love and moving on. Both pathos and logos appeals are used in the lyrics to demonstrate Miley moving on from her past relationship along with focusing on herself.
