Commonly “is a time of monumental shifts in the child’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development” (page 1, paragraph 2), but this can also be a very scary process for the kids, so he can be more away from his parents and getting closer to friends.

The actual kids are heading in to puberty at an earlier age than they used to. Now, it’s common to start that age between 9, 10, or 11 years old. Dr. Laura Kirmayor, a clinical psychologist says that the changes can result in growing pains from extreme growth spurts, and also cause kids to become really self-conscious about their bodies.

Dr. Kirmayes says that it’s at this age that kids go from the more literal and self-absorbed perspective to view the world for the first 8 years of their lives. But now, they think in their own opinions and they are only beginning to know how to regulate and tolerate.

Major social factors that come up during pre-adolescence include: Independence, social hierarchy and cliques, and the gender code.
