The majority of students have displayed a good attitude towards PE class to date. Some students however, need to be kept away from each other when working in groups in order to keep them focussed on the task at hand. One student has displayed a total lack of interest in PE, while one student has shown to be a little self conscious in the PE class.

Rationale

TPSR was chosen as a model for this particular class group for a number of reasons. There are two students in this class who have exhibited behavioural problems throughout the year, across all subjects In my view, this behaviour can be managed by teaching these students to take responsibility. However "To become responsible, students must learn to take responsibility. However, they cannot take responsibility if they are not given some responsibility" (Hellison, 1996). The TPSR model can also be beneficial in helping students to hone the skills needed for the CBAs across all subjects. The model aims to provide students with the opportunity to "Reflect", "appraise" and "aspire" (Luttrell & Chambers, 2013). These skills are vital for junior cycle CBAs, and also help the students to work on the key skills of junior cycle. More importantly, the skills taught in this model are vital for students going forward in to senior cycle. As they progress through senior cycle, students will need to take more responsibility for their work across all subjects.

I feel that this is a good time to introduce this model for two reasons. Firstly, the students will be preparing for state exams and some may struggle with this. On a more serious level, the school has just experienced the loss of a student in tragic circumstances. Luttrell & Chambers (2013), outline how "Students extend their sense of responsibility by cooperating, giving support, showing concern, and helping others. Cares about others.... helps others who are having difficulty and is sensitive to others' needs" , and how these skills can "Transfer outside the gym" (p.220). In my opinion, these skills extend far, far beyond the classroom. Students can gain the skills needed to help and support their friends in time of need, something which is hugely important in Coláiste Choilm at the moment.

The lessons in this scheme will take place in both the indoor hall, and outside on the all-weather pitch. Each week, the students will be shown a video of the skills which they will be practicing and will be asked to reflect on where they are on the totum pole., baring in mind how they participate in class, interact with others, co-operate and help and support their peers. Each class will be learner-centred as "the activity content must have some meaning to students" (p.228). Students will also keep a reflective journal every week, in which they will reflect on the different levels on the totum pole and where they feel they are on it. In each lesson, the students will be offered a choice of activities, in order to establish "a safe environment in which to practice, learn positive behaviours and develop productive decision-making habits" (Metzler, 2005).
