Eben goes shopping. He goes shopping at Baby Gap. At Baby Gap he sees the perfect shirt. But the shirt costs too much. The shirt costs 8 pesos. Eben only has 5 pesos. Eben can’t buy the shirt. 

Eben goes shopping again. He goes shopping at Shirts R’ Us. He sees the perfect shirt. However, the shirt costs too much. It costs 25 cents. Eben only has 15 cents. (He also has 5 pesos, but he can’t buy the shirt with pesos, only US Dollars.) Even can’t buy the shirt. 

Eben doesn’t have a shirt yet. He goes shopping at The Shirt Store. The shirt doesn’t cost too much. The shirt is on sale. It only costs 1 cent. Eben buys the shirt! 

Of course, it doesn’t have to be just a “shirt.” You could also include other items of clothing, like pants or shoes or whatever. But, as Susan Gross says, “Shelter vocabulary, not grammar.” 

If you teach Spanish and you use “shirt,” you’ve got to listen to La Camisa Negra by Juanes. A lot of the song will be incomprehensible for beginner/intermediate students, but the chorus line will surely stick in their heads! 

TPRS TIP: Take a moment to discuss conversion rates, and ask “So how much does the shirt cost in $US if it costs 25 Mexican pesos?”

Jenny is sleeping. Her mom enters and yells, “Wake up Jenny.” Jenny doesn’t wake up. Her mom tosses Pepsi on her. Jenny doesn’t wake up. 

Jenny is sleeping. Her grandma enters and yells, “Wake up!” Jenny doesn’t wake up. Her grandma tosses jelly beans on her. Jenny doesn’t wake up. 

Jenny is sleeping. Her principal enters and says, “Wake up Jenny!” Jenny wakes up for 2 seconds and tosses her backpack at her principal. 

It works best to keep your sleeping actor the same person throughout all 3 locations, just change the person who comes in and yells at her. You could also get some practice telling time with this story (ex. “Wake up Jenny, it’s 7:30!). For a similar story, see the story script Wake Up Please.

I saw Bob Sagget. He wanted my suit. Bob Sagget only had a Coke. He  gave me the Coke. I drank the Coke, but I didn’t give him the suit. 

I saw Barack Obama. He was wearing a suit too. I wanted his suit. I had  some strawberries. I gave him the strawberries, but he didn’t give me  his suit. 

This is one of the first stories I ever wrote. I had worn a suit to school this day for  some reason, and I figured it would be a hot topic, so I decided quickly that the suit  would be perfect fodder for a story. Instead of a suit, you can wear a unique hat,  jacket, or whatever. You can also change this story to make it about your students.
