In chapter 1, we meet Violet, Mother, Father, Chloe, and Stephen. The story is set in 1920, and women cannot vote yet. Violet finds letters from Chloe, her older sister that were hidden from her mother. Chloe was sent away by her parents. She now lives in New York where she is a nurse with her car and is a "New Woman". Which means she believes women's rights. Violet is upset because her mother hid these letters and she misses Chloe so much. Violet's best friend died two years ago from influenza known as the Spanish flu. Her brother Stephen is about Chloe's age and she doesn't know much else about him. In the end, Chloe is on the banks of Susquehanna River feeling very mad at her parents for hiding the letters.

In chapter 2, Violet decides to run away. She brings her birthday money and catches a train. While she is on the train, she meets an anti suffragist called Mrs Renwick. The old lady Mrs Renwick gives her questions. She asked her things like:"Where are your parents?" and:" aren't you too young to travel? Then Mrs Renwick brought up that she is dying. But she does not know what she is dying of. Violet suggests that maybe she is not sick or not dying. Then Mrs Renwick said:"are you a doctor!?" and then Violet said:"actually I want to be a reporter." So then Mrs Renwick said: that women cannot have jobs because they were the Lord made them so that they could protect men. And Mrs Renwick thought that if women had no jobs, nobody would protect them.

We read chapter 3 today. The message was when you feel like hope is lost, you could find somebody or something that can lead your way. In chapter 3, when violet was scared and getting harassed, myrtle helped her out and dusted her off after she fell. And Violet walked with Myrtle on the streets of New York. As they talked, they slowly became good friends. Even though Violet did not expect it, they were similar to each other. One way that they were similar was that they both had something looming in front of them. For Myrtle it was being a maid. For Violet it was marriage.

He is a hobo and Speaks slang and at first Violet thinks he is gross and wants to get away from him. But myrtle asks him if he can help them. He says that he can help them to catch a blind ride. This is when someone would get on a train, but find a spot where the conductor cannot see them. At first violet didn't want to do this, but she had to get to Chloe. so they got on the train to Philadelphia at 12:00 am. Hobie went to the jungle for some hobo stew as violet and Myrtle stayed back. When he came back with dinner he also found a place for them to sleep. The next morning they took a train to Baltimore. But a CRIMINAL was there. He was the brakeman. He told them to give him the ticket money OR ELSE. But they had no money. So he grabbed Myrtle and prepared to throw her off the MOVING train. Eventually violet said, I have money!!!!

Myrtle shows Violet her old home, which was called Louse Home Alley and was an alley. Then they head over to where Chloe is, or was. When they got there, they knocked on the door and a young lady suffragist answered the door, surprised. Then Violet went in and saw The famous Alice Paul. She asked her where Chloe was and Mrs Paul told her that Chloe had gone to Tennessee for the Susan B Anthony amendment. Tennessee was the strongest Strongest suffragist state, so Chloe had to go there to help get women their rights.

The old lady had started to tell her about her struggles in slavery. She lost her children, and her husband! Then after being free, she started a new family. But there was still segregation and separation. Then Myrtle told the lady that women will still get the right to vote. But Myrtle doesn't know that it will probably just be white women. The old lady tells her that. Then violet gives her dinner and goes back to her train. Luckily Chloe still has faith in the vote for all women.

Two men called Palmer agents tried to find Mr. Martin, and they question the suffragists about him and accuse the women of not being very intelligent because they are female. The two men treated the women like they were dumb. We see examples of inequality with the Jim Crow car and Myrtle being separated from the rest of the group. Another example of inequality is between men and women, we can tell the agents don't think women should get the right to vote.

It is unequal and unfair that men and women cannot eat in the same restaurant, especially given that there isn’t a restaurant just for women. She also realizes that the woman who pinned a red rose on her at the train station was an Anti, and she was staying in an Anti room at the hotel. She finds out she can eat sandwiches if she goes to the Anti's meeting. As she listens to them speak, she learns how they are getting men to change their minds about voting on the Susan B. Anthony Amendment. Violet overheard some people talking and they said, "Mayhew" and she got really excited to finally see Chloe! Chloe and Violet finally see each other and Violet tells Chloe she had ran away from home to find her. Chloe is really tired and doesn't seem to be much help to find Myrtle or Mr. Martin.
