Poem: "Explaining My Depression to My Mom" by Sabrina Benaim

Sabrina Benaim uses literary devices to explain the differences and difficulties that come with mental health, specifically in this poem, depression. She talks about how some days she might seem fine and as one might call it “normal” and happy; however, that feeling could change in just a split second. For people who struggle with mental illness, many find it hard to describe what they are feeling and why they are feeling this way, which is just one reason one might go to therapy. Sabrina in this poem perfectly reflects the feelings one might feel when struggling with depression, though everyone is different, with a great use of pathos. Sabrina uses her mom as the person she is explaining her struggles to, which in my opinion, give this poem a deeper meaning. Mothers, for a lot of people, have a very strong connection to them since they care quite a lot of their children. So imagine trying to explain something that you can't quite describe yet to someone who has cared for you most of your life, its very hard. This poem has the connection with mental health awareness as she is explaining that people with mental health are also trying to figure what they are going through so don't push people so hard.

Duke Women's Basketball Instagram Post

As someone who struggles with mental illness and who stills comments time to play sports, this post made me particularly happy. People who are not athletes may think it's all fun and games when playing a sport, which for the most part it is. However, the more you progress into a sport, the more pressure builds, the more people expect from you, and there is always going to be someone better than you. One has to have very thick skin when it comes to playing a sport, which is why when I am at my weakest some days, I find hard to even want to show up at practice. The way this team makes an effort to show that they care about mental health, which is pathos, makes me love the women’s basketball community even more. This game and this instagram post brings a lot of awareness for mental health of what people go through no matter their background or what they do with athlete.

Song: "Anxiety" by Julia Micheals

By just the title, many can already make assumptions about this song. Julia Michaels and Selena Gomez, who is featured in this song, have been very open about their mental health these past years. This song really brings awareness to the struggle of opening up to friends and family, which brings out some people's biggest weakness and makes them the most vulnerable. It also brings up subjects with social anxiety, for example the line, “My friends, they wanna take me to the movies I tell ’em to f*** off, I’m holding hands with my depression” and being sorry or apologetic to people about what you can't control. “Anxiety”, the song, truly explains many of the thoughts one who struggles with these disorders have and deal with most of the time.

Podcast: Adult Sh*t

This was the first podcast I had ever listened to and I would not have had it any other way. Just half way through the 45 minutes, I was relating to so many things about therapy, feeling unworthy and subjects I truly thought I was the only one going through it. This brings a lot of awareness to the youtube community as many youtubers have also been opening up about struggling. These two girls have been in many videos on a very popular channel on youtube, Buzzfeed, and have come together to make a podcast. This is just one of the many mental health podcast episodes they have. In this episode, they talk about what they have dealt with over the years, how some things just don't work for them, how helpless they felt through their toughest times, and letting people know they are more than what they are dealing with. This truly brings awareness to how people are not alone and don't be scared to help yourself because you only have yourself through life.

Meme: About Anxiety and Depression by Olivia Ross

I made this meme based off what had happened a year and a half ago with my three best friends. We had been friends since 6th grade and in the beginning of 7th grade is when I began dealing with mental health issues. I didn't open up fully to them until the middle of 8th grade and there was such a relief off of my shoulders, that the people I trust most finally know what I am going through. I wanted to bring awareness to people just supporting each other and letting people who deal with these things know someone is there them when they need it. I had also used a picture from my favorite band 5 Seconds of Summer, who have also been open with what they deal with in their music or in their social media. They have been a big part of my journey from making me feel less alone and letting me turn to music as my getaway.

Final Conclusion

Mental health awareness has always been very important to me since a lot of my family deals with it, including me. My feelings and emotions of the awareness have not change and if so, would only let me support this subject even more than I already do. The media side for mental health I believe has gotten very supportive in the last two to four years. There are many more people offering their help and being open with their experiences which helps others feel they are not alone. The different pieces of media for mental health awareness represents very well about a variety of thoughts one might have. However, I believe that everyone's experience is different and everyone is affected by mental health in so many different ways, it's hard to kind of put an umbrella over the subject. One big thing I had learned for myself is I am not the only one who has these thoughts or sometimes feels unworthy for help or feels bad for crying. I learned I am not alone and do not deserve to go through this alone, just like anyone else who is dealing with the same thing. Times get hard and we need to be there for ourselves and the ones we care about the most, spreading positivity and love.
