The Nile River was an important resource for Egypt because it provides Egypt with water for crops and for providing drinking water. It also made life easier for Egyptians as it helped them trade and transport goods. Egyptians refer to it as the "lifeblood" of Egypt.

At the beginning of the Nile, is the delta which empties into the Mediterranean Sea. The land at the delta is very marshy and nutrient rich. This fertile soil is excellent for planting crops that helped sustain the population around the river. It splits into the Blue Nile and the White Nile. It also borders the largest deserts in the world, the Libyan Desert and the Sahara Desert.
Periodically, the Nile flooded and the Egyptians adjusted to the conditions by learning to build levees to manage the conditions.

In the Egyptian culture, when a pharaoh passed away, they believed they would then live in the after life and prepared the bodies for the afterlife. The process is referred to as embalming or mummification. The process involved removing the vital organs and storing them in jars to be buried with the corpse. Once prepared, the bodies were wrapped in strips of linen, placed in a sarcophagus (coffin) and then laid to rest in their final resting place the pyramid (tomb). Often times, in preparation for the afterlife, certain valued items such as their pets, jewelry, gold, food, furniture, weapons and clothing were buried along with them.

Farming in Egypt

One of Egypt's main crops was papyrus, a reed plant that was used to produce paper and other household items necessary for daily living in Egypt. Egyptian farmers developed new tools to make farming easier. One of these tools, a shadoof, is a bucket that scoops water from the Nile and empties it into basins. Additionally, Egyptians gathered papyrus, a reed plant that grew wild along the Nile, was used for making sandals, rope, baskets, and river rafts. When planning for the harvest season, Egyptians used Geometry to measure the area of their land. This would help them to recalculate where one field began and the other ended.

In ancient Egypt, a pharaoh was both a political ruler and a religious ruler. The word pharaoh means "Great House" and the Egyptians viewed the pharaohs as representatives of the gods or goddesses. Egyptians were loyal to pharaoh because they thought he was the son of Re. Among the most famous of pharaohs was King Tutankhamen. He became king at the age of 10 and died unexpectedly, after 9 years in power. A queen pharaoh, Hatshepsut, chose people who were loyal to her to serve in government positions. A pharaoh named Amenhotep IV created a new religion by worshiping the sun god, Aton.
