         <description><![CDATA[<div>Tay Son rebellion led by three brothers from the village Tay-Son. They removed the Trinhs and the Nguyen from power. Nguyen Anh, the only survivor of the Nguyen clan sought help from the Thais and the French missionary- Pigneau de Behaine, to end the rebellion and recapture the throne. The French supplied him with ships, arms and advisors. Nguyen Ahn defeated the Tay-Son brothers and founded the Nguyen Dynasty(1802-1945) and was then known as Emperor Gia Long&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Emperor Tu Duc signed the Treaty of Saigon whereby<br>1. Saigon and three adjacent provinces were ceded to France.<br>2. The ports of Tourane, Balat and Quang Yen in Annam and Tonkin were opened to French trade.<br>3. French ships were allowed to sail along the Mekong River.<br>4. Vietnam had to pay war reparations to France.<br>5. French missionaries were given freedom to continue their work in Vietnam<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>1802-1864 Under the rule of emperor Minh Mang, the persecution of Catholics began. This was in opposition to the overcoming of the confusion religion which was supported by emperor Minh Mang. The persecution was further intensified under the rule of emperor Duc Duc and then emperor Tu Duc. It culminated in the whole scale slaughter of thousands of catholic pilgrims and their followers. This gave the French a reason to invade and occupy Vietnam</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>French occupation caused a vicious resistance from the mandrins(nobles and advisors) who refused to cooperate with the French. This caused France to continue the war and occupy the southern provinces in Vietnam. The french then forced the Vietnamese to surrender three more provinces, the whole of south Vietnam as well as the Mekong Delta fell under French rule.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The whole of southern Vietnam had been annexed by the French, and direct rule was imposed. The Vietnamese governor who reported to the Vietnamese emperor at Hue was replaced by a French naval officer who administered to Conchin-China as a direct colony of France. Many local officials had left and thus the french governor ruled with assistance of an administrative system managed by mainly the French. Thus Vietnam became an official French colony.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
