This was in opposition to the overcoming of the confusion religion which was supported by emperor Minh Mang. The persecution was further intensified under the rule of emperor Duc Duc and then emperor Tu Duc. It culminated in the whole scale slaughter of thousands of catholic pilgrims and their followers. This caused France to continue the war and occupy the southern provinces in Vietnam. Many local officials had left and thus the french governor ruled with assistance of an administrative system managed by mainly the French.
