An article by the American Association for the Advancement of Science debates the benefits and downsides of having dolphins in captivity. Dolphins are considered to be too intelligent and "sentient" to be kept in captivity, but the research on the dolphins have revealed much of the information scientists know about them today. Dolphins are reported not to survive long in the small, chemically treated tanks; scientist Marino reports that, "It's no wonder that intelligent, social dolphins swim in circles and jump out of their pools, and that these stresses contribute to their premature deaths from gastroenteritis, fungal infections, and other ailments: You can't replicate the natural settings for these animals.”
