As the first exercise concering this course I have watched the whole tutorial about the basic of OmegaT software. The man speaking in the video presented how to prepare a source-document, create a project within the software, import the source-document, tweak the project and translate the text segment by segment, export the translated  target-document.

What I acutally did:

I entered YouTube platform and searched for video tutorials concerning basics of OmegaT software. I carefully listened to him while he was doing each exercise on the screen.

Now I'm fully aware of the basics of OmegaT software. I know how to do fundamental moves within the program and the project.

Learning needs:

– downloading the files from the client, 
– creating a folder to perform proper file management, 
– creating a new project within the software, 
– importing the files from the client, 
– adding the words to the term base, 
– importing translation memory, 
– translating the text using translation memory, creating target text

Now I can use OmegaT software quicker than before because I'm more aware of certain steps. I know how to do fundamental moves within the program and the project.

What I actually did:

I attended some interesting talks during the conference concerning translation techniques and machine translation sources, didactics, translation internship, etc. I was present on the speeches of: Prof. Maureen Ehrensberger-Dow concerning "MT Literacy. What translators and their trainers need to know." Prof. Ricardo Muñoz Martin, "Roadblocks on the way of situating translation didactics." Prof. Oleksandr Bondarenko with his speech "Translation internship: how to make it a win-win for industry and academia."

After the break, I also attended Christian Olalla-Soler and Nicoletta Spinolo speech "A BIBLIOMETRIC STUDY ON THE EVOLUTION OF INTERPRETER TRAINING PROPOSALS (2001-2020)", Olga Mastela and Agnieszka Seweryn "STUDENTS’ TRANSLATION COLLECTIONS AS A FORM OF ACTIVATING TS STUDENTS AND PREPARING THEM FOR THE CHALLENGES OF COLLABORATION IN PUBLISHING PROJECTS." 

The learning outcomes/effects

Taking everything into account, speeches were really educational, thought-provoking and well-delivered. I was excited to listen to them. I got to know the translation market and translators reality better.

Gathering and thoroughly describing OmegaT software steps.

What I actually did

I uploaded all the screenshots in a zip. format on a separate website since I'm allowed to post here one photo only. Each entry number contains information of the JPG name where the current step is presented. 1. First basic step is creating a new project in OmegaT. To do that, we click "Project", and then "New." (JPG name: 1) When we have our project created, we can perform all the steps in OmegaT.

2. We may also open our existing project on which we were working previously. To do so, we click "Project" and then "Open." (JPG name: 2 and 3)

3. When we create a new project, we can also choose languages which we are going to work with. The screen shows where we select a language for our source text and for the target text. (JPG name: 4)

4. If we already have a Translation Memory file, we can paste it into our project folder, precisely in "tm" under "auto" file. Then, when we work on particular segment, we can click CTRL+R to automatically translate that segment from TM. (JPG name: 5, 6, 15)

5. To add a new word to our glossary, in other words to create the TB (Terms Base), we simply highlight a particular word, we right click on it and then we choose "Dodaj wpis do glosariusza" which stands for "Add new entry to glossary." (JPG name: 7 and 8)

6. To edit already existing glossary in txt. format, we go to our project folder, then to "glossary", and then we open "glossary" file which is in txt. format. Here we can edit each word or add a new one. Then we simply save the file and click F5 in our project, by doing so we will have our new entry visible in the project. (JPG name: 9, 10, 11)

7. How to locate project resources on the computer? When we enter our main project folder, we can see some subfolders. In the folder "target" we have our target text file. How to generate target text while using OmegaT? Just click CTRL+D and then a new file appears in the "target" folder. Translation Memory file is located in "tm" folder, under the "auto" folder. The source text is in the "source" folder. Glossary, which we can edit in the txt. format is in the "glossary" folder. Finally, the dictionary, which we can add from any external source, is in the folder named "dictionary." (JPG name: 12)

8. To add files to the existing project, we click CTRL+L and in the left corner we click "Kopiuj pliki do folderu źródłowego" which stands for "Copy files to the source folder." (JPG name: 13)

9. To work in the Editor Panel just double left-click on the segment. Then you are able to translate the segment. (JPG name: 14).

Watching memoQ tutorial.

What I actually did

Today I watched a video called "Getting started with memoQ - a session for translators (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWHIh-X3GME&ab_channel=memoQ).

The learning outcomes/effects

I got to know some basic steps concerning memoQ software. I now know how to create a new project without a template and then how to set its name, source language, target language, project information, domain, client, subject. Then we can see a window where we upload files. We can import standard documents or  click "import with options" and then the documents, for example with comments, will be uploaded. 

Next window concerns translation memory (TM). We can even specify client's name for whom we are using our TM. We can use one term base (TB) in different language combinations. There are different areas in the dashboard, for example, "Translations", "Translation memories", "Term bases", etc. To work on our document we can double click on its name or choose "translate" in the top left corner. 
On the right hand side we have "translation results" which shows matches with the TM. Each sentence should be confirmed as translated in the top left corner by clicking the button "Confirm." Also, if we delete a tag in our target sentence, which is visible in the source text, we will get a message from the software that there is a tag missing. If you see an exclamation mark, that means there is something in the text that you should correct. In this situation we can click F9 or "Copy Next Tag Sequence" to paste all the necessary tags into the target text. If we have, for example, two tags, one at the beginning of the word, and the other at the end of the word, we can highlight that word and click "Copy Next Tag Sequence" and the software will automatically add both tags at once. 

To export our file we click "Export" in the top left corner and here we choose "Export (Stored Path) which means a path which is suggested by the software. What I actually did

Today I'm going to discuss English (Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA)) and Polish (Narodowy Korpus Języka Polskiego) text corpus. These are crucial tools when it comes to the correctness of our translation work.

What I actually did

I described how to use these online sources which are really vital when it comes to the corectness of our translation work.

The learning outcomes/effects

We can use these sources, for instance, when we are not certain if a particular phrase or collocation functions in Polish or English. The layouts of each page are really easy to understand and simple to use. Important: you have to create a new account and log in to use the COCA source, your university name shall be added and your account will be working as a student account. There are certain limitations within the basic account, they are gone after 24 hours if you use the search engine too many times than possible. There are four columns: search, register, context, and account. To use the search engine we simply write down a phrase or a word which we are interested in and we click "find matching strings." In research and context column there is a sentence which says: "Once you do a search, your results will be displayed here"; so basically we first have to look for a word or a phrase and then the rest of the columns will be available for us.

When it comes to Narodowy Korpus Języka Polskiego (NKJP), its layout is even easier to understand than COCA's. On the start page of the website, we click "Wyszukiwarka Korpusowa PELCRA" on the right hand side. And then, under "Wyszukiwarka korpusowa PELCRA dla danych NKJP (Cytowanie)" in the blank space, we write down a word or a phrase which we would like to find in the corpus. Translating the same text using different online machine translators

What I actually did

Today I'm going to compare a piece of text translated from English into Polish in four different online translation software: Google Translator, DeepL, Microsoft Bing, and PONS. When I finish comparing these online tools, I will present my translated version, which I perceive as quite good one. 

Source text: Nancy’s second golden age was the turn of this century, when glassmaker Emile Galle founded the Ecole de Nancy, a forerunner of the Art Nouveau movement in France. 

Google Translator: Drugi złoty wiek Nancy to przełom tego stulecia, kiedy szklarz Emile Galle założył Ecole de Nancy, prekursora ruchu secesyjnego we Francji.

DeepL: Drugi złoty wiek Nancy przypada na przełom tego wieku, kiedy to szklarz Emile Galle założył Ecole de Nancy, prekursora ruchu Art Nouveau we Francji. 

Microsoft Bing: Drugi złoty wiek Nancy był przełomem tego stulecia, kiedy szklarz Emile Galle założył Ecole de Nancy, prekursora ruchu secesyjnego we Francji. 

PONS: Drugim złotym wiekiem Nancy był przełom XIX i XX wieku, kiedy to szklarz Emile Galle założył Ecole de Nancy, prekursor secesji we Francji.

My version: Drugi złoty wiek Nancy przypada na przełom tego stulecia, kiedy to szklarz Emile Galle, założył Ecole de Nancy [szkoła Nancy], która zapoczątkowała nurt secesyjny [Art Nouveau] we Francji.

The learning outcomes/effects

As we may infer from the translated versions, PONS added "XIX i XX wieku", which is not present in the source text. What is more, that is not true, as previously in the text it is mentioned that it was the turn of 18th and 19th century. Also, in all the versions, we can see that the inconsistency between the subject and the verb is present. That completely changes the meaning of the sentence as if Ecole de Nancy was a person.

What I actually did

According to the home task which was assigned to Translation Studies students, I would like to gather all the information concerning recruitment procedures and requirements for translators and extend its content if possible. 

What I actually did

I did a detailed research when it comes to the information concerning recruitment procedures and requirements for translators.

The learning outcomes/effects

In some translation bureaux a sample translation is needed to be verified by a certain company whether a candidate is experienced and qualified for a position that he applies for. All such translation samples are checked by experienced employees of the Quality Control Department relevant to certain translation bureaux and the candidate will be given feedback if necessary. Verification process covers: specialist terminology and subject knowledge, completeness of the translation, punctuation, style, formatting.

Sometimes the candidate has to indicate fields of expertise, for instance: Tech/Engineering, Art/Literary, Medical/Pharma, Law/Patients, Science, Financial, Marketing, etc. Also, the candidate has to mention CAT and DTP Tools to which he or she has an access to: Trados, Studio, memoQ, Transit, Wordfast, Across, Adobe (InDesign, FrameMaker), etc.

The candidate is also asked for educational qualifications, years of translation experience. What is vital, the future employer is interested if the candidate has ever translated any academic paper or industries/business/technical documents.

Companies look for translators, interpreters or proofreaders who are experienced and qualified. Companies are also keen on working with translators/interpreters who are experienced in a specific discipline. Companies are looking for creative, friendly, and well-organised people to join their team.

Companies put great emphasis on the quality of our services, which is why they cooperate with professional translators who can certify that they are competent in at least one area defined in the ISO 17100 standard: 

– a university degree in linguistics, philology, translation or a similar specialisation, the curriculum of which includes translation practice and which is provided by a recognised higher education institution; 

– higher education in another field from a recognised tertiary institution and at least two years' practice as a professional translator;
