The city is soliciting proposals from nonprofit agencies providing public services to Kannapolis residents.

Nonprofit agencies can apply for a $5,000 public service grant to address eligible community needs.

Funding Academic Learning Center would allow students who need additional instruction grasp skills and tools to succeed in the classroom.

If your neighborhood has lots that are overrun with trash, dead trees, overgrown grass, and its become an eyesore to the community, we can help. The Neighborhood Beautification Program (NBP) grant provides funding to Detroit-based neighborhood associations, block clubs, faith-based organizations, and non-profit organizations that currently own property or purchase Land Bank vacant lots (up to 4) to carry out a project in their community. Grant awards range from $500 to $15,000.

To date, the Neighborhood Beautification Program as beautified 157 lots in every Council District throughout the City of Detroit. You can apply for funding in three eligible project areas: Clean-up Activities, Community Gardens, and Public Space Activities.

"The City utilizes CDBG funds to educate residents and elected officials on Ohio Fair Housing Laws, ensuring compliance with federal and state legal standards. This session will provide an overview of fair housing requirements, including how certain land use and zoning practices may result in differential impacts on protected classes defined by federal law—such as race, disability, or familial status. It will also explore historical lending patterns that have influenced housing accessibility and inform policy decisions that support lawful and equitable community development."

This informative and engaging workshop will be hosted by the Ohio Attorney General's office and is open to all agencies who provide assistance to our residents in relation to their housing.

In a quiet neighborhood of Kettering, Ohio, Sarah, a hardworking single mother, faced an overwhelming challenge. Her modest home, filled with memories and dreams, was becoming increasingly unsafe due to critical structural issues, making it particularly dangerous for her 7-year-old son, Ethan, who lives with cerebral palsy.

Ethan’s mobility challenges meant that everyday tasks, like navigating the hallway to his bedroom or safely using the bathroom, became risky and stressful. The house lacked essential accessibility features, causing Sarah constant worry and Ethan daily struggles.

Through the City of Kettering’s Housing Rehabilitation Program—funded by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)—Sarah found renewed hope. Our BIG IDEA was simple yet powerful: every family deserves a safe, healthy, and accessible home.

We partnered with local contractors to install wheelchair ramps, widen doorways, and remodel the bathroom to accommodate Ethan’s wheelchair and safety needs. Additionally, critical repairs to the home's foundation and electrical system ensured their home was not only accessible but secure.

Today, Sarah no longer lives in fear of her home being unsafe. Ethan moves around freely, with newfound independence and confidence. This project didn’t just repair a house—it restored dignity, independence, and joy to a deserving family, illustrating precisely how community investment transforms lives.

When Regina was diagnosed with severe arthritis and could no longer walk, she felt like her hopes and dreams were crushed. She had stairs leading into her house and her door was not wide enough to get a wheelchair through it. In desperation her daughter reached out to her local city official and found out the City of Canton offers a CDBG program called "Safe at Home". Seniors that are choosing to age in place can apply for grant funds.

Eligible repairs may include:

• Repair/replacement of porches and steps.

• Repair/replacement of doors.

• Installation of ramps.

• Installation of necessary railings and grab bars.

• Installation of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, where needed.

Regina received a new door, grab bars and a ramp was installed. She can now safely get into her house and the grab bars have made it easier to shower and use the restroom.
