Highlight #1: TN State Capital

The first several stops on our journey were at the Tennessee State Capital. During our time here we learned about the ratification of the 19th Amendment, Sarah Polk, Elizabeth Rhodes Atchison Eakin, and many other important women! We also met two tourists from Virginia who are sisters. They are part of an organization to preserve and promote the education of historical places. Many of the sites were under construction but we were still able to see a lot of incredible things.

Highlight #2: Hermitage Hotel

The Hermitage Hotel in Nashville played an important role in women’s history as the headquarters for both suffragists and anti-suffragists during Tennessee’s ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. This is where women waited to hear the verdict of the 19th Amendment ratification. Also, the first person to test the elevator here was a woman.

Highlight #3: YWCA

The third highlight from this trip was the YWCA. We found it very interesting to learn about the way that the YWCA changed from a lunch place, to a center with a gym, and now it is a center for women and children experiencing domestic violence. We also found it interesting that while the YWCA was only open to white women, it has since changed its mission to fighting racism.

Highlight #4: Downtown Presbyterian Church

Visiting the Downtown Presbyterian Church reminded us how architecture can tell powerful stories of cultural and historical transformation. This place-based learning experience deepened our appreciation for how buildings can embody the complexity of women's roles in shaping public and spiritual life.

Highlight #5: Vine Street Temple

While this building is no longer standing due to tornado damage, there were many pivotal Jewish women who helped here. This place was especially important for refugees fleeing WWII. The Ward Seminary was next door, which Harpeth Hall now traces its lineage back to.
