Realismis an artistic movement in France in 1850s. Realism is the first modern art movement to reject traditional art forms, literature, and social organization. The Realism artists often paintlandscape, genre, portrait and still-life paintings rather than historical events. The well-known Realism artists are Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), Jean-Francois Millet (1814-1875), James Whistler (1834-1903), and Edward Hopper (1882-1967).

Dadaismis an art movement that began in Zurich, Switzerland in 1916. Dadaists are shocked by the terror of the first world war destruction. They use many varieties of materials, such as performance and sculptures, in order to shock their audiences and poke fun of the war. The famous Dadaists are Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), Tristan Tzara (1896-1963), Hugo Ball (1886-1927), and Francis Picabia (1879-1953).

Land Art, or earthworks, is an art movement in which landscape is used as artworks during the late 1960s. The name iscoined by Robert Smithson. Materials, such as stones, water, gravel, and soil are used as art elements for earthworks. The famous Land artists areRobert Smithson (1938-1973), Michael Heizer (1944-), Andy Goldsworthy (1956-), and Richard Shilling (1973-).

De Stijl is a Dutch word meaning “The Style” and it is considered one of the longest lived influential group of Modernism since World War I. De Stijl are collaboration of painters and sculptors who often paint in rectangular form, primary colors: (red, yellow, blue, and black, white, and grey), and composted into asymmetric balance. The De Stijl painting can be composed into different counterpoints or different lines. Some De stijl artists include Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931), Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1965), and Marlow Moss (1889-1958).

Orphism is one ofexamples of Analytical Cubism because of the vertically arranged geometric planes and bright colors. The term Orphism is coined by a French poet named Guillaume Apollinaire in 1912. The term Orphism is also named after the Greek myth of Orpheus because he represents the artistic inspiration of light and color. The Orphism artists are Robert Delaunay (1885-1941), Aristarkh Lentulov (1882-1943), Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979), and Frantisek kupka (1871-1957).
