The care home staff photocopied more comments cards for us to use and manager had put posters up to advertise the session, which was really helpful

I printed extra packs and laminated some of the cards we used, so I can take them to other homes

Sessions gave good opportunity to ask staff to complete whilst we was there as they can et so busy and may not get time if left.

I went back to the home to speak to the resident's that were unable to get to the lounge and spoke to them in their rooms. Staff within the home identified these resident's.

At one care home a member of staff took us to speak to residents individually as they were in their rooms, we also managed to speak to some family members who were visiting and also gave out some leaflets to other family members who were just leaving. The poster was up in the foyer and leaflets were in the staff room. We also spoke to staff at handover and some cards were completed.

Another care home we did a group activity with 7 residents contributing. We used the icebreaker quiz and the prompt cards which sparked some ideas. Also chatted to 4 members of staff who had some good suggestions.

We have had group sessions so staff and families could engage with each other and could help each other where needed. We have also sent out to families who do not always get in to visit and we advertised via the newsletter. We have had good feedback so far.

Quiz questions

"Afternoon session involving 12 residents and 3 staff members. We used the quiz questions to open the session which lasted about an hour. The quiz questions were great but a few more questions would have been good. Residents enjoyed it - it generated a good discussion"

Exercise & mobility

"The residents really enjoyed the discussion and it sparked us talking in-depth about some of the areas we covered. My residents were all very keen on the mobility and exercise which has generated myself into restructuring our exercise activities and ordering some new equipment"

We used the opportunity of a staff meeting to encourage staff to take part and discussed other studies/research we have been involved in as a home.

Follow Up Sessions

It would be great to have some follow up sessions; where residents where given the specific research ideas generated and they could vote on them. I think this would help include a wider range of residents as well

Care home implementing change following PREACH discussions

"Some of the feedback we received from the residents has prompted us to facilitate a regular monthly ‘talk’ as some of the residents on the day of (RDN) visit, expressed their interest in learning more about dementia.

Our activities co-ordinator started with a talk on dementia, followed the next month by an oral health talk and we have more subjects arranged"
