Each day I have to problem solve and adapt based on student responses. I spend a lot of time thinking about how I can do teach something differently and more concretely for student understanding. I use problem solving because there isn't always a clear cut answer, I have to take the information I have about the student and use that to connect the new learning with.

Communication

My job requires that I communicate clearly to lots of different people. I need to be able to clearly communicate the 5th grade standards for all kids with various experiences in order for them to each understand, master and transfer the skills in various settings. Sometimes the best communication I do is when I can see when I didn't communicate clearly and restart the lesson or conversation.

Every day I work closely with teachers, students, parents and other administrators. We work together to solve problems. Our biggest "problem" is how do we make our school and instruction even better and really prepare kids for the future. This is a challenging because we don't really know what the future will look like. While this is a tricky question, it is also an exciting problem to be faced with! I need to clearly communicate this challenge to others, collaborate with all members of our school community and think critically about the pros and cons of different solutions that are posed. While this is hard work, I love brainstorming new ideas for the classroom with teachers. I also like working with students and families to make our environment a place where all kids feel safe and challenged.

Time Management

In my professional and personal life, I find managing my time efficiently helps to make me successful at whatever task is at hand. Having enough time to complete projects and give them the time and attention they require is crucial to succeeding.

Dedication, discipline and time management...I run each and every day (unless I'm really sick). I have to be dedicated to myself and my well-being. I have to remain disciplined so I don't miss a day and I have to manage my time and schedule accordingly, so I can make sure I have one hour a day to run.

Build Friendships and establish lasting relationships with peers and co-workers. Hard work, knowledge and dedication are important, but whenever you have an opportunity to build a positive lasting relationship with a co-worker, superior, subordinate, or a new aquaintance, take advantage of it. You never know when you will have the opportunity to provide someone with a career opportunity or more importantly, when you may need an opportunity. Who you know, is very often just as important as, what you know.

Being able to adapt to new environments and change is very important. Change is hard for many people and in life there are always changes and difficulties, being able to adapt to change quickly is an important skill to be successful. Take one difficulty and challenge at a time instead of overwhelming oneself with all changes and difficulties at the same time. Live in the present, not the past. And be ready to accept change!

An important step to improving anything you do is recognizing 'you don't know what you don't know'. A willingness to seek advice from people more experienced than you, and listening to that advice, will increase your ability to succeed more quickly. Whether its your parents, your grandparents, teachers, coaches, or friends, they may have a lot to offer. Remember to take time to listen and learn.

Ensuring you are organized for both the short and long term is crucial to staying on top of your commitments. I have lists of actions that I need to complete each day, as well as those that need to be done in the coming weeks. Throughout my day I also review my calendar to ensure I'm ready for meetings and other activities. Preparation means that most of the time, not always, you can do your best and enjoy the experience.

Without teamwork it is difficult for a group of people to achieve productive results in spite of an efficient process and proper work flow structure. Effective teamwork firstly involves identifying the characteristics that are necessary to build a good and efficient team. Whether in the workplace/ school, or in sports, or amongst members of a community, teamwork can produce extraordinary results. However, that is easier said than done, for, efficient teamwork does not happen automatically. There are a number of factors that are required to cohere together, working seamlessly, for an effective team to develop and work.

Give the people in your life the information they need rather than expecting them to know the unknowable. Don't try to read other people's minds, and don't make other people try to read yours. Most problems, big and small, within a family, friendship or business relationship, start with bad communication. Speak honestly, and then give others a voice and show them that their words matter. And remember that compromise and effective negotiating are vital parts of effective communication.
