I love the idea of using the spaces is the classroom as a creative outlet for the students. This would be my first step, having the students enter a blank classroom, but also engaging other teachers and spaces in the school (ie. library, hallway walls) to document the exhibition process, and the learning of the student groups.

Leveraging Technology

One of the unique things we can have students think about, is how people consume the information they want to be presented with. Could students create a blog? Use different locations around the school armed with QR codes? Create an Instagram profile for their learning and their experience? Is there a better way than traditional poster board? I think so, and I think that technology can unleash this! Set students up for success by showing them the amazing options in front of them!

Connect With Your Theme

With the class and school stage set, and the tech tools in place, students should make connections with their theme. HWEO might lend itself to a gallery walk, where as STP might lend itself to more of a hands experience or live experiment. Maybe WPT is a museum exhibit, WWA is an activity that the viewers participate in, or HWOO is step by step checklist for viewers to go through at their own pace? Making the correct choices for your theme is important.

Students should understand that an experience is something that happens to people, and with people. Thinking about ways to have their viewers involved in an experience will create memories that last forever. What can people do while learning? How can the experience be different for different viewers? Students might find it valuable to incorporate agency into the experience of their viewers as well!

Making strong math connections, art connections and even language connections can bring more diversity into the final exhibition outcome and display.

It is very important to work with a wider community. It means interviewing people out of school, going field trips and inviting speakers to provide more information on the issue. It is also so much fun to invite all of these people to the Exhibition day!

Students can share their learning through expert visits and visiting different places that can give them more insight about their exhibition topic. This will be an interactive and a different activity for the fifth graders. It will keep up their motivation level because it is something they have not done before so they will give it their 100%. This will help them share their thoughts and ideas!
