The director informed us all that this play will be set in a different time period than the original. The director wants this play to be set in late 1900s and early 2000 and wishes to change the setting to be in America. This play will be set in more modern times but everything else will pretty much be the same. We all have to work together to make this vision a reality and I as a set designer will make sure to follow this guideline and time period when making decisions on decor and setting.

The play a doll's house is important because of what it can teach us and the themes that surround it. Torvald was very controlling over his wife Nora even over small things showing that his love for her wasn't always genuine or constant. He had so much power over her and their marriage felt forged and like they weren't in love. The theme of marriage is depicted from the beginning to the end of the play. It also shows some feminism of Nora being a perfect housewife and how she stood up and opened her eyes to see Torvalds love for her wasn't genuine and left back. She realized she was like a doll in a doll's house being toyed around by him. I think many women can take something by this play and even men to just see what an unhealthy marriage looks like and how it's not always obvious like the spouse causes physical harm but mental and having the courage to leave or break off a relationship. I think there's a theme of money as well which is the subject from the first act to the last. Nora's character is seen as a spendthrift and she bragged big about her husband's promotion and blatantly lied about where the loan came from.

As for the theater stage, the director decided it would be most fitting to go with the thrust stage as it gives more intimacy, and the audience can all feel close to the action that happens on stage. Everyone in the audience can see well what happens and can hopefully find themselves in some of the characters. Understanding the interactions between characters and the type of play a doll's house is, I too think this is the right theatre space.

this play surrounds the marriage of Torvald and Nora and it explores their relationship. Torvald sees Nora as a doll and is very controlling over her with what she eats and does. Nora is cheery and loves to spend money. In the past Torvald got very ill and they had to live in Italy where he would receive treatment. At that time, they were not doing well economically so Nora asked Krogstad, a co-worker of Torvald to borrow money so they could stay in Italy. However, she had kept this from her husband and everyone else and lied to everyone telling them she got money from her dad in order to afford this trip. We know her husband is against borrowing money and being in debt. Now in the present Torvald is receiving a promotion soon to be a manager. Krogstad blackmailed Nora to get her to convince Torvald to help him out. He even sends Torvald a letter telling him everything Nora did. Ms. Linde convinces Krogstad to change his mind. In the end, Torvald reads the letter and gets very upset with Nora. Then came a new letter and it said Krogstad had forgiven Nora and Torvald is happy and says they can start all over again, but Nora has an awakening moment and realizes Torvald never loved her and leaves.

in the play, the living room is described as "comfortably and tastefully, but not expensively furnished" as they are not wealthy but better off now. To create a comfortable room, I think the furniture should be wood-like for example the bookshelves and the rocking chair. Since the play takes place during Christmas and the play mentions a Christmas tree, I was thinking of an aluminum Christmas tree as they were popular in late 1960s to early 2000s. It very well fits the time period the director wants.

We don't see Nora enter this room, only people from the bank or dr. Rank. Torvald is often in his study throughout the play, and I think the interior of the room should not be seen, only the door opening and closing. I think it would be more better this way because of the symbolism.

a cabinet filled with China plates is mentioned in the original play and I want to add it as well on set. Having plates on display has always been known to represent elegance. This is important because although the Helmers are better off, it's kind of ironic with the situation of Nora paying back a debt and Torvald hasn't been promoted by the end of the play but it was all Nora could talk about and how they were soon going to have loads of money.
