- He left for Italy to work as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross
- He was wounded and while he was recovering in a hospital in Milan, he fell in love with a nurse. He proposed to her, but she turned him down and he returned to the United States.
- In 1920 he moved to Paris with his new wife Hadley Richardson, to try to pursue his career in journalism
- Life in Paris wasn't easy, due to the fact that his work in journalism wasn't bringing in a lot of money
- He then met some very influential people, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound and F. Fitzgerald
- In 1926 he public his first major novelle "The sun also rises" - it was an immediate succes
