Hà's mother says that one of her brothers must get up first on the holiday Tet and step on the floor because male feet bring good luck. Instead of following what her mother said Hà taps her big toe on the ground before anyone is up.

Ha is very ambitious when it comes to growing her papaya tree.
 For example when her family has to leave to protect themselves from the war, Ha almost stays back to grow her papaya tree.
This may not sound like a big deal but when you think about it Ha would stay back to grow the papaya tree despite the war and despite the fact she probably wouldn't see her family ever again.
