The chapter is of Isla's little brother taking the money from the box to buy hot dogs. The brother takes the money their mum has been collecting and spends most of it on 23 hot dogs. He tells Isla about it and Isla helps hide the box while teaching the boy how to make 2 minute noodles. So the brother won't need to go get hot dogs anymore.

1. How does the author build a suspenseful tone at the start of this chapter?
Use of foreshadowing words such as quiet and dark makes us believe something is not right in the house.

2. Plainly, Isla's little brother has stolen and done the wrong thing. Using examples, explain how the author has managed to still build sympathy for this character?
Author builds sympathy for the brother as we see him say words such as "I didn't mean to do it", and Isla thinks "It looks like he's about to cry, or maybe he had been crying. "I nearly got hit by a car when I got off the bus". These quotes make us believe the brother knows what he did wrong and is really sorry about what he did.

5. Describe the representation/s of the children's mother. What do these add to the story?
The representation of the children's mother is that she would always leave and "drive off" whenever the kids did something wrong such as "leaving a door open so the hot air leaves the room", these incorrect things the children do seem really minor and makes the mum seem as she is overreacting.
