The group has more of a mob mentality and has become more violence driven rather than communicating together and deciding as a group what they should do. Now there are 2 different groups that are pitted against each other because of the conflict between Ralph and Jack. An example of how the divide has formed is when Piggy starts to like to involve himself in Ralphs actions more this shows the divide between the two groups that have been formed and how others actions drive the division

Changing Simon's name to "the beast" (152) in chapter 9 doesn't seem to change the meaning of the chapter, but rather supports it. This is because the rest of the chapter displays how primitivity and craze that they developed during their time on the island has made them more susceptible to the influence of fear. Renaming Simon to "the beast" (152) gives perspective into the children's minds and how they have been affected in this manner.

The change in the name shows the change in how the group saw Simon. The boys didn't view Simon as human anymore, but "a thing... crawling out of the forest." (Golding 152) During their chant, they saw the first thing that they could use as a victim. The chapter first showed the issues arising when a group splits apart. The meaning later changed to how mob mentality brings dangers. Simon used to be part of the group but suddenly turned into the enemy because of the dangerous thinking present in the group.

Also, it depends on which human we are talking about being evil because sometimes people make mistakes and don't mean harm. But other characters, such as Jack, know what they are doing. Maybe he doesn't mean to harm others, but he definitely defies the rules and causes conflict.

The thematic topic of evil being in everyone becomes more real than in any other chapter, showing how through the influence of others, people make decisions that aren't rational. Changing Simon into "the beast" more showed how the evil in others came out, and the beasts within themselves, rather than Simon who was labeled as one.

This may symbolize that the boys are going from their normal civilized selves to uncontrollably fearful beings that act without thinking, following no morals whatsoever.

Given their time in they have spent on the island, they were under the influence of fear or the "Id" part of the mind. This is futher supported in how later in chapter 10, it is noted that "By common consent [Ralph and Jack] were suing the spears as sabers now, no longer daring the lethal points" (177), displaying that when they are able to think more clearly, they do not have the intentions to kill, only harm.

How the danger of the mob has changed from the beginning of the book to chapter 9 is that the kids were less violent and more innocent. An example that shows this is at the beginning of the book the kids were just playing around, on the beach, in the water, not caring about their duties. Some of the littluns still don't care, but the older kids have lost some of their innocence as the story has progressed. They have become more serious about surviving, but they don't really think about being rescued anymore. They have become savage, killing the pig and eventually killing Simon.
