The Tell-Tale Heart

The Tell-Tale Heart, written by Edgar Allan Poe, is a short story that belongs to the Gothic and horror tradition. It is narrated in the first person by a man who insists he is not mad, though his words and actions reveal his unstable mind. Obsessed with the “vulture eye” of an old man, he decides to kill him. After several nights of watching, he finally suffocates the old man, dismembers the body, and hides it beneath the floorboards.

When the police arrive, called by neighbors who heard a scream, the narrator appears calm and confident. However, while speaking to the officers, he begins to hear the sound of a beating heart, growing louder and louder. Consumed by guilt and madness, he breaks down and confesses the crime.

The story is short but intense, marked by repetition and rising rhythm that mirror the narrator’s mental state. Its unreliable narrator, dark tone, and psychological focus make it a classic example of the short story genre, highlighting themes of guilt, obsession, and madness.

The Tell-Tale Heart- opinion

In my opinion, The Tell-Tale Heart is one of Poe’s most powerful stories because it explores the human mind in a very intense way. I like how the narrator tries to prove his sanity, but every detail he gives shows the opposite, which makes the story even more interesting. The suspense grows with the sound of the beating heart, and the ending shows how guilt can completely take over someone.
