The response given by the neighbour expresses his views and ideologies of how he feels in regard to change, in regard to discovery. This statement shows that society is limited in its ability to accept discoveries; however we as society are also limited by the people who make the discoveries in question. The poet refuses to disclose his findings in any detail and offers up the excuse of "and I'd rather
He said it for himself." This is representative of how people would rather withhold the revelations that they encounter due to fear of criticism by the society that they live among. These not only affect the wider communities of today but they also offer up the implications of future societies and how they encounter discoveries. In the future discoveries and the revelations that they possess will have to combat the people such as the neighbour who prefer to live in the past that is drenched in tradition rather than allow anything else tamper with that; but they will also need to fight through the people who choose to with hold the information and keep them for themselves due to fear of persecution and being assimilated out of society.

They can push us to react with vigour to our discoveries or with a sense of apathy. This is no less true for the poem the mending wall. The cliche "good fences make good neighbours" is a prime example of how the past can inhibit our ability to react to discoveries. The entrenched notion in society that barriers are necessary for survival is questioned by the persona however he struggles to do anything about as he is inhibited by societies long held values. 

This bodes poorly for the future as a society that struggles to evolve and question long held ideas, is one which is doomed for failure. As he initially states the truism, Frost apathetically ponders the true reasoning behind the wall, and going against traditions through the use of rhetorical questions. His thoughts are instantly shut down as the popular saying is repeated in the last line of the poem. It is ironic that the only thing brings them together, is literally setting each other apart. The values of the past also blockade revolutionary ideas as the neighbour states "he will not go behind his father's saying." The personification of his father's saying indicates how past traditions have indoctrinated society today and causing people to fear change. This idea is also related to people who may have revolutionary ideas, but conceal their discovery due to the anxiety of persecution and ridicule by the public. This brings implications for the future. Values of the past limit discoveries made, however, the persona transcends this notion when he discovers that there is more to a relationship than the barriers where they meet. However, the persona decides that it is best for the neighbour to make his own discovery and therefore he kept silent. Robert Frost raises some issues for the future, questioning how humans can discover and develop when we hold on to obsolete values. how can we progress?
