The Ketonet

For those of you who don't know, the Kitonet Pasim is a garment that Yaakov gave toYosef. Nobody is fully aware of what it represents or what it looks like, but we spoke to the Radak, Rashi, and the Sforno to help us with this. The Radak says that the Kitonet is actually just a colored and striped garment. Rashi's first opinion is that the Kitonet is a fancy green wool coat. Rahi's second opinion is that the coat symbolizes royal status. The Sforno's opinion is that the coat symbolizes high status. After hearing all these opinions, we were able to make a small connection between the 4 opinions. The Radak and the first Rashi opinion both share the fact that Yosef is receiving a regular coat. The second Rashi and the Sforno actually say that it was more than just a coat, and that it represented status. While there is no way to determine who's opinion is correct, maybe it is a possibility that all 4 opinions about the coat are actually correct. Check this article next week as we try to discover more about the Kitonet Pasim.

The Opinions for Ben Zikunim

The meaning of Ben Zikunim has a been a mystery for years. Some say that it is the reason that Yaakov truly loved Yosef, but this word has been truly hard to figure out, until now. I spoke Rashi in person who shared his 3 opinions on this, and Ramban who gave his own opinion on this as well. Rashi's first opinion was that Ben Zikunim means when Yaakov was old, Yosef was born, so Yosef was miracle child. Rashi's second opinion actually comes from our old friends Unklus, who says that Ben Zikunim actually means that Yaakov taught Yosef everything he learned in Yeshivat Shem Vaever, so they had a special bond. Rashi's third opinion is a madrash which says that Ben Zikunim means Yaakov's appearance was similar to Yosef. Ramban's opinion differs from Rashi a bit, and he says that have a "Ben Zukinim" was actually a custom that old people took their little son to be by their side and serve them, which is why he loved him the most. Hearing the opinions of Rashi and Ramban in person were truly amazing to hear, and to write about.

Yosef's Father Speaks Out About His Dreams

Rashi, The Ramban, and the Chizkuni were at the scene of Yosef telling his father about his second dream live, and we spoke to them to tell us what we really all want to know, Yaakov's reaction. Rashi begins by saying that Yaakov didn't even rebuke Yosef for this because he believed it, rather he rebuked him because he bragged about his dreams. He continues by saying that when the brothers saw Yaakov believed Yosef's dream, they became very jealous that Yosef would be chosen. The Ramban shared his opinon in this, saying that Yaakov laughed off Yosef's dreams and told the brothers "shh, don't listen to Yosef." He continues by saying that the brothers got mad at this because Yaakov isn;t getting Yosef in trouble, so they had ti take matters into their own hands. The Chizkuni says that Yaakov is not even upset at Yosef, but he rebukes Yosef so the brothers would calm down. This actually ticks off the brothers more, since they can tell it's fake. While it is unclear which opinion is correct, all opinions seem to be a possibility for what Yaakov said, so now it is up to you to decide who is correct.

Reuven vs. Yehuda

There has been a massive debate on who's idea of what to do with Yosef was better. The Bichor, Reuven, or the brother which kings come from, Yehuda. The original plan for the brothers was to kill Yosef and throw him into the pit, but many people say that Reuven plan is much better because he told them not to. Reuven's plan was to tell the brothers to throw Yosef in the pit and let him die there, but Reuven would eventually sneak Yosef out. Some say that Yehuda's plan is the better one because his plan was to sell Yosef to the Ishmaelites, and not kill Yosef. While many people can argue Reuven plan was better because he intended to keep Yosef alive, many could also argue that Yehuda's is the better plan because his plan was to not kill Yosef at all.

The Evidence of Who Sold Yosef

Hi readers, this article is going to be speaking about what the Pesukim in Perek Lamed Zian and Perek Lamed Tet say about Yosef being sold. From the words of the Pesukim, it is very unclear to understand who sold Yosef to who, but we gave it a shot anyway. Pasuk Chuf Hay begins by saying that the brother were eating, and they saw the Ishmaelites, and they sold Yosef to them, who brought him to Egypt. Pesukim Chuf Vuv and Chuf Zian states that the brothers were just going to kill Yosef, but Yehuda suggested to sell him to the Ishmaelites. Pasuk Chuf Chet is where i gets confusing as it says that the Midyanim took Yosef out of the pit, and THEY sold Yosef to the Ishmaelites who took him to Egypt. the confusing part is that the "they" who sold Yosef is not specified. Continuing on with Perek Lamed Vuv which simply says that the Midyanim sold Yosef to Potiphar in Egypt, but then in Perek Lamed Tet, Pasuk Aleph, the Pasuk contradicts this and says that the Ishmaelites old Yosef to Potiphar in Egypt. While the Pesukim don't tell us specificaally who sold who to who, it gives us the suspects of The Midyanim, Ishmaelim, and the brothers as to who sold Yosef. Check out our next article "The Mefarshim Weigh in on Who Really Sold Yosef", to find out what the Mefarshim say on this topic.

The Mefarshim Weigh in on Who Really Sold Yosef

We spoke to Rashi, The Ramban, Ibn Ezra, and the Rashbam, in order who them to help us answer the question on who really sold Yosef. Rashi states that he believes that the brothers sold Yosef to the Ishmaelites, who sold Yosef to the Midyanim, who sold Yosef to Potiphpar in Egypt. The Ramban disagrees with that opinion saying that the brothers actually sold Yosef to the Midyanim and the Ishmaelites, who were working together as business partners, who sold Yosoef to Potiphar in Mitzrayim. The Ibn Ezra agrees with The Ramban's opinion on the order, but changes the his opinion around a bit, saying that the Midyanim and the Ishmaelites didn't have a business partnership, rather they were actually considered the same people. The Rashbam goes with a totally different path saying that the brothers were eating lunch on the side, so the Midyanim took Yosef out of the pit and sold Yosef to the Ishmaelites, who brought him down to Egypt. He adds on saying that the brothers didn't sell Yosef, but put him into the position to be sold, and that the brothers sincerely think Yosef is dead. While it is hard to determine who is correct in this contradiction, it gives us a clearer picture of who sold Yosef to who.
