From 1920 to 1933, the United States enforced the 18th Amendment, which banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages nationwide. This period is known as Prohibition.

The law drastically changed the demand for legal alcohol because it became illegal to buy or sell it. However, underground demand for alcohol persisted and even grew in some cases due to the allure of illegal “speakeasies.”
