SONG 1 : SUBJECT MATTER

In my opinion, the song is expressing the belittling tiring nature of being mentally unwell, accompanied by an extensive period of un-improvement leading to a gradual decline in sanity and hope.
The repetitive phrases, 'Beating me Down, into the ground.', could be describing how although a silent problem, the continual thoughts and mindsets become heavy and aggressive and unforgiving in their treatment. It's quite openly expressing how intense and torturous feeling these ways are. They're not weak, and you are everything a victim to how they run your life.

The phrase 'Falling Away from me', could be the description of losing one's self and identity after being consumed by their illness, and who they once were they've parted with. Falling produces a picture of helplessness and an overall negative outcome. When you fall you either hurt your self or in more tragic cases, cause serious harm or lose your life. This again coincides with the phrases,' You flirt with suicide, sometimes that's okay', and 'I flirt with suicide, sometimes kill the pain'. The whole subject matter of the song is conveying black thoughts and a losing battle rather explicitly and accurately.

Allot of the sounds found within this song are either disjointed, gritty, 'glitchy' and heavy, or they're 'aloof', isolated, gentle, and reverbed. What's a nice connector of these two key factors is the singer's vocals. He mixes and switches between isolated gentle but unnerved vocals, to aggressive and intense vocals during choruses. It's a motif throughout the song, a split between two places and moods somewhere along the lines.

There's always a deep heavy rumble dotted during the song, creating a sense of comfort or anxiety depending on how you interpret it. It reminds me of the sound design you'd hear in a horror game. Nothing clear, but deep enough and loud enough you feel it and know somethings going to happen or is happening. You're just unsure of what that is.
The drums always cut through cleanly and sharply, you can always hear the rhythm. It keeps you on track if you feel like you're getting lost, whilst everything else seems to bleed together in confusion and loss, but it works. It's intentional and fits the theme of the song.

This setup of blending gained guitars during the chorus that then ring out at the end of their time is heavy, hit you hard, and can seem overwhelming as they're more of an added 'rumble' and noise level than a nice clean melody to follow along with.
There's constant glitchy noises adding texture throughout the quieter verses, potentially a constant reminder of the heaviness always around the corner, and continues the theme of unclarity yet aggression through sound.

Another factor I love about the vocals is that they're not clear-cut and precise. They're not perfect by what you'd say perfect standards are through analysis of technique, or pop ideals. They favor the expression of emotion, almost theatrical in presence because that value to express the feeling is greater than the need to sing a line perfectly.

There's a section where a call and response is present. The 'call' vocals are aloof, distant and to me convey a sense of hysteria and dreaming. They've disassociated from the mess that's occurring. The disassociation is further continued by the lyrical content, and the repeated phrase returns, 'Falling away from me'. The 'response' to this call is more within reality. It's clear, not distant within the sound field, and lower in pitch. It's almost like the other half of this person's perspective once they come down to reality from their dreams. They're stating what's going on a clean-cut, it's harsh and analytical, almost medical when compared to the call. Again the lyrical content supports this, 'It's spinning round and round.', 'It's lost and can't be found.'.

When the chorus vocals return after this moment of realization and analysis, they're heavy, repetitive, and continue their same phrase, 'Beating me Down'. How heavy everything comes together after some distorted dysfunctional quiet makes me interpret the chorus as the breakdown, or the mental episode when everything intense, and it's hard to process and endure, but it always arrives.

MELODIC | HARMONIC | SONIC CHARACTERISTICS

The melodies are repetitive, constant, but reliable. They're all minor and that is one of the first indicators of a song on which side of the board it's going to be found. Happy, or sad in its self.
Jonathan's vocal melody has s set pattern, but his notes sometimes tap on and off, and switch between singing and speaking the words. This, however, implicates the instability of the song and its content. The only melody he's certain of and sticks by is the one found in the chorus. The section in my interpretation can be identified as representing the mental breakdown, or an intense situation where everything becomes too much. It's the only occurrence that can be relied on.
There's one segment, after the second chorus, where the melody is soft and soothing, and major. It's hopeful, and not missing its core melody notes. There is, however, accompanying this melody a harmony of shouting and aggression. The reminder that everything is not so sweet is never too far behind within this song.

The main riff that instigates the song is reverbed and modulated in its presence, making it almost sound unstable and haunting, yet it's center of the sound field until the verses get underway. During the verses, it takes more of a left-side occupation. Despite this, however, it's a strong key base throughout the song, and can always be found almost like comfort. Something to always rely on to return during the song. This hook is what got me instantly intrigued by the song and picked up my attention due to its quirky sound. You could almost say it's already alluding to what the content of the song is about; it's not a strong stable clean riff, it's isolated, 'wibbly', and 'insecure'.

Little Hell to me is almost as if the singer is having a pivotal conversation with someone near and dear to him, and it's a conversation instigating a hopeful and positive change in their dynamic and relationship. From my interpretation, it's one of those conversations after a long time of neglect in a relationship, and losing sight of how much that person meant to you. Some rocky roads have been traveled. But not anymore.
It's a very honest and intimate song, the singer is laying out flaws and being very open about how they've made mistakes, 'But my addiction it can be such a detriment', and 'There's a degree of difficulty in dealing with me'. But doesn't stop there.
They describe ways to get out of their situation, the 'Little Hell'.
Something about this song implements that idea of you can't control life and what happens within your stories, but he's going to try to get by the best he can, 'What if everything's just the way that it will be, Could it be that I am meant to cause you all this grief'.
It's a beautifully hopeful romantic song, but not in a sensual way, more so of care and affection. A desire to not lose what has been built, and making it clear that they'll stop at nothing to progress no matter what life holds.

The texture within this song is clean, soft, and reverbed. It's very comfortable, soft, and welcoming in its construction. It's not overwhelming one bit. All segments are clear, and have a special spot in the sound field, with the vocals being above and strong yet gentle throughout. The acoustic on the left is crisp and sharp in tone, and on the right side, the electric guitar is clean in tone but blends warmly and smoothly with its melodies floating throughout the song. The bass guitar is comforting and again gentle, just like the drums are so. They're not heavy and trying to gain isolated attention, everything is working in tandem as a team, to move this story forward and make it a most pleasant experience as they all can.

The melodies in this song are homophonic, to begin with, but as the chorus is introduced, a polyphonic melody begins with the duet created by the vocals and right side electric guitar. Two different melodies are always dancing alongside each other from this point onward. But they always return to their same routine in the chorus. They respect one another, not one or the other is taking too much from the other, and they both exist peacefully during the song. This harmony in construction fits the theme lyrically of this song, as it's representative of a new beginning and a desire for two halves to start a new, but work together and move forward yet be themselves in their existence. A positive fresh start of a relationship.
The vocal harmonies always accent the end of verses and the finale of the song. They alternate between being a lower or higher third during the verses, and at the finale, a set of higher fifths.
The acoustic and bass melodies are repetitive, and follow the same pattern throughout. All melodies are major, in comparison to the first song, being primarily Minor. This song is hopeful and positive, therefor Major fits it's desired interpretation more than a minor would.

On the right side, there's a constant confident electric guitar playing various melodies and riffs throughout the song. Not to consider confident as loud and aggressive, It's clean, and slightly reverbed, and has a warming tone. It's almost singing alongside the vocals, like a duet. Keeping the singer accompanied during this song.
On the left side of the sound field, there's a constant acoustic guitar rhythm being played. It's comforting, constant, and can be relied upon. It keeps the song going just like the drum rhythm does, and both aspects support the singer to continue telling his expressive tail.
The drum's rhythm is soft, swinging, and gentle. It keeps everyone in time, but it isn't there to be powerful and overwhelm. It's a supporting factor, once again like the acoustic guitar. Just like the songs lyrical content however, there's nothing to hide. This is a time, to be honest, and just like the lyrics, musically, nothing is bleeding over into one another. Everything can be heard when paid attention too, and the vocals always take center stage. Even vocals, it's in the center of the sound field and above everything else. It's an open song, and he wants to be heard and doesn't want to hide his story.

An understanding and experience is being shared.
'Little Hell', however, makes me feel relaxed, honest, and hopeful. Like a brand new start after acquiring a new will and intent to make a change in a relationship, or outlook on life. To pursue those brighter days that lie ahead if you work hard to get them and make differences and change. It also makes me think of the end of Summer, late August days into September in the evenings.
