In line with Scarlett’s thoughts: how do we move past the insularity of social media? Looking at different platforms, there are different demographics of, for example, Facebook vs. Twitter vs TikTok, and then of course there are different bubbles within each platform, not necessarily interacting. I wonder also about the power dynamics at play on social media, where certain voices are louder than others. I guess the questions I’m trying to get at are: is it a problem, for modern day feminist discourse, that some voices are louder than others? is social media a good space for conversation, and who is contributing to that conversation?

this topic is a bit random but I wanted to ask about how you feel about women being more "dramatic" and fight each other, because as much as I want to think this is not true, it rings true in so many communities I am in. I wish I could just blame it on the patriarchy, but do you think it is in our nature to be more engaged in gossip and drama? I feel like a bad feminist any time I talk about someone behind their back etc, because I know men are so different in how they socialize with each other.

I agree with the person who notes the usefulness of the term “patriarchy”, and want to add: I’m not sure it’s worth pandering to people who aren’t acting in good faith? If someone takes “smash the patriarchy” as “smash men”, they’re not engaging in good faith, they’re not educating themselves. Likewise with the term “toxic masculinity”: it doesn’t mean men are toxic, but that the certain modes of masculinity are harmful (to both men and women!). “Toxic masculinity” is a useful concept. If we change terms like “patriarchy” and “toxic masculinity” we lose the important feminist theorising behind those concepts, and we pander to people who aren’t acting in good faith.

Scarlett, I'm interested to know how you've approached this with your younger brothers? My brother is 16 and I see him developing some problematic views about women and gender in general. I know he'll grow and his views will change a lot, but how can I encourage him to be more feminist or at the very least be more empathetic to what it means to be a woman in this world...? (sorry I know you just said you have no interest in educating men about feminism!)

(Hi Katy!) Just on the topic of marriage and living in patriarchal structures- our approaches to feminism will change over time, as other aspects of our life change and evolve, and external expectations intersect with that. Feminism is in constant negotiation and flux. The idea of a 'perfection' with feminism is entirely contingent. One more point on the idea of patriarchal structures- a lot of this conversation has given the impression that 'structures' appear ephemerally, and are almost natural. They aren't, but enacted by individuals.
Beth x

This is just super interesting - one thing I've tried to change in how I speak with other women is to stop saying "congratulations" when people get engaged. Instead I say things like "I'm so happy for you, that's fantastic news", etc., but being in a relationship or being engaged is not an achievement as such - good relationships take work, but I would much rather congratulate my female friends on a promotion or pursuing a passion or buying a house or whatever, something that has to do with THEM as people rather than a man having asked them to get married.

Something which I really noticed in your book was the sense of blossoming (epanouissement) which was made possible when you stop engaging with men and instead turn to women for emotional support and fulfillment - I thought this was absolutely joyful, kind of as was being discussed earlier, how much more time and mental space that women have when they opt out of thinking about beauty or romantic love or men's opinions. I wanted to thank you for highlighting this really positive side, a sentiment of 'look what becomes possible when you don't prioritise men', and I was so grateful for the way you articulated. Please could you tell us something about when you first realised what could grow in the space that you cleared?

I have been feeling increasing resistance towards female heterosexual friends who fully embrace patriarchal norms to the point of portraying marriage or motherhood as something they wouldn’t be complete without. Is it possible to liberate oneself from the pressure to “fit in” and the feeling of being inadequate if you are not married/dating/pursuing these societal standards?
