How do I find a good project during my DCT year? I'm stuck!

Great question!

I would suggest the first thing to consider is what you want to get out of "a project". If your aim is "CV brownie points" - have a look at the person specification for the job you're next applying to or want in the future. This might give you an idea about where to focus; audits, research or case reports etc.

Once you know what your goal is, brain storm ideas - what are you interested in? Read journal articles, get inspired. If you're in the market for an audit for your ARCP, seize the low hanging fruit - every department will have annual audit requirements that your local governance lead will happily delegate to you! The same is true if you're a keen undergrad looking to get involved in extra projects.

Look up your local consultants on researchgate and see who is publishing actively in your area of interest.

Once you've found a colleague you think you'd like to work with, drop them a line, meet them for coffee, pitch your idea. Now the important part - there's a fair chance they shoot your idea down, but because you showed the initiative of proposing a project, they are now happy to share with you their ideas, their project ideas, and this is the best way to start cooking something up.

Remember, work smarter not harder. When it comes to portfolio points, you may find that a well thought out audit is worth as much if not more than a multicentre trial you never got off the ground.

How soon after second degree medicine can you give up your GDC registration?

Great question.

Short version: it depends

Long version:
To complete surgical training and become an OMFS consultant, you need to have "dual registrable" qualification in Medicine and Dentistry. Historically, the easiest way to show that was by being registered with both councils.

However, it is not technically required to be dual registered - just dual registrable.

In theory, you could qualify medicine and immediately drop GDC. However this would mean no dental/DCT locums whilst working, and depending on unit no OMFS locums either.

OMFS is a GMC speciality. Therefore if practicing wholly and only OMFS a consultant does not "need" to be registered with both. However, the GDC have a fairly broad definition for dentistry, and if the care you provide will be viewed as dentistry, you need to be GDC registered: think dental implants, clinics in dental settings, teaching dental students etc etc.

This is a complex political question, and whilst needing 2 degrees is very unlikely to change, dual registration is something with definite likelihood of development and change, so watch this space.

I'm currently an FY doctor. Definitely want to do OMFS. Any suggestions for F3 before going for my dental degree?

Hi, thanks for the question.

I think the first thing would be getting as far through MRCS as you possibly can would be a great goal.

In terms of OMFS experience, get in touch with your local units, your regional rep should have contact information for you. You may be able to do some shadowing and pick up up SHO level locums etc. Keep an eye out in September time on NHS jobs as lots of trusts will fail to recruit a full dental core training rota. It's not unheard of for interested medics to be able to pick up regular locums covering those rota gaps on the on the DCT on call rota but you would need some relevant OMFS experience as above.

Another biggie would be getting some A&E experience, this will be really useful as a locum speciality when you return to dental school so try and get a decent A&E experience under your belt.

Re: portfolio development, the OMFS person spec for ST3 is available online and is a good way to checklist your work and make sure you're picking up the relevant points with projects and audits etc.

Hope that helps? Get back to us if you have any more specific queries?
