La campaña tuvo varios propósitos, que fueron: someter a la obediencia criolla a los indígenas del desierto, terminar con los "malones indios", rescatar a los cautivos en poder de los aborígenes, incorporar tierras para la agricultura y la ganadería y efectivizar las soberanías provinciales sobre los territorios incursionados.
