Like in the story the narrator's mother wants her to take the SAT's seriously, While the narrator doesn't really want to study and even in the end she leaves with her friend Cat. Children want to get out and do what they want while adults want order and they're the ones that tell children to do what the Parents what rather than what the children want to do themselves.

Parents are often too strict towards their children and don't fully appreciate the fact that kids want to have fun while they can. Parents also need to understand that kids are naturally defiant and will choose adventure over the safe options in life. If parents and their children can't see eye to eye this often hurts their relationships with each other as shown in the story.

The relationship between parents and children can be tenuous because a lot of the time parents try to put their experiences onto their children. Parents do it so kids don't make the same mistakes as them and as a way to keep them safe, but kids see it as unfair or annoying. Sometimes kids just have to take their own path and experience life their own way to really grow.
