You may see all the ingredients, and think that all you need to do is gather and arrange them, just like a cooking recipe promises a predetermined outcome from a set of ingredients prepared a certain way. 

There is NO recipe for play invitations, though. In fact, the process of designing play invitations is more like learning an art form.  It is more than creating a pretty display of toys for the children and requires understanding of your children’s play motivations.

Provocations: Invite children into NEW motivations in play (scaffolding)

  • We are not here to shape children's play, we are her to support it
  • Play is a process and children are in control of it
  • Our role is to observe and witness children's play and then offer ways to further support it (Invitations) and scaffold it (provocations).
