As communist ideas began to spread in Singapore, riots and protests occurred as the people wanted to end British colonial rule. Example, 'Hock Lee Bus Riots' and '1956 Student Riots'. The '1956 Student Riots' showed us how Lim Yew Hock took a tough stance against the communists so as to work with the British and gain confidence from them, thus enabling him to gain internal self-governance for Singapore. When the '1956 Student Riots' occurred, it was because the Singapore Chinese Medium Middle School Students' Union closed down due to communist activities and thus students were unhappy. However, Lim Yew Hock handled these riots swiftly as he arrested the student leaders, called the army and the police, hence the riot ended. This suggests that Lim Yew Hock was capable in taking actions to prevent riots and dealing with communists properly. This gave British to have trust and faith in him as he was able to suppress the riots successfully. Therefore, unlike David Marshall, he did not threaten the British to get what he want and instead cooperated with the British to help Singapore. By being against communism and taking the same stand with the British, fighting against communists threats, he gained British interests in how he took care of the riots. When the trade unions and chinese middle school students distrusted the LF government, marshall just gave in to their demands and did not take strong actions against them. The British thought that he was not capable of managing problems and therefore, he was unsuccessful. Furthermore, he demanded the British for internal self-governance and he used threatening method to want for a change. Additionally, during the 'Hock Lee Bus Riots', marshall did not take harsh actions but instead tried to settle the dispute by setting up a commission of inquiry, however both parties could not reach an agreement and this caused the protests to continue.
