intelligent - During WWI he had an Army that he noticed was too large for a single person to manage. He split the Army into pieces and put commanders over those pieces. That freed him up to have oversight over each piece and could maneuver them in the best way to reach his goals.

Disciplined - required all members of his unit and eventually the entire Army to have the same standards and strictly enforced them

Stern but Fair - Although he was a stickler for the rules, he did listen to his subordinates. One of his pet peeves amongst the ranks was age and fitness. When he met Col … thought he was overweight and should be discharged. The Colonel stood his ground and was allowed to remain in the military
Organized

Didn't instill confidence within the ranks (not well liked) - Received the nickname not out of admiration but out of disdain. "Black Jack" was a name they called him for his dealings with the 10th Cav. It was meant as disrespect since nobody really wanted to command a black unit.

Showed little to no empathy - If an officer didn't have his troops in order there was no mentorship he would just replace them. Officers were afraid to have him around.

Not easily adaptable - Since he didn't always listen, when the army became too large and there was problems in training, morale, unit cohesion he didn't want to hear excuses. He himself had to come to the conclusion there was a problem before he listened to advice from the officers in the field.
