What Makes a Good Story? by Jake Pedersen

Think about a story (can be a novel, movie, folk tale, etc) that you really like? Why? What makes it a story that you like? It can be characters, plot (storyline), setting, supsense, climax (peak drama), ending (resolution), etc.

Thus the title, "Breaking Bad".

A narrative that I love is the book "Earthlings" by Sayaka Murata. There are many reasons to why I love this book, with one of it being the plot. The book tells us a story revolving around the main character "Natsuki" who believes that she is an alien since her early years. The book starts off with Natsuki, who was first introduced to us as an abnormal 11 year old. Then it fast forwards into the present where Natsuki is in her 30s and willingly binds herself in a marriage with a man she found on a random website. As a grown woman, the remnants of her burdened past are constantly chasing and catching up to her regardless of how she pretends to live as a normal 'earthling'.

Throughout the entire book, we see things from Natsuki's point of view, where most of surrounds how she felt alienated (figuratively and quite literally) from the human world. One of the things i liked most about this book is its commentary on how the human world / our society works: specifically reproduction and work. Natsuki, being someone who thinks of herself as 'foreign' to the human world is not particularly fond of how things function within our society. Most of her views on the world are warped by the traumatic events she goes through as a child, her belief that she is an alien, and what she feels society expects from her as a woman. She referred to the world as a 'factory', her womb as a 'factory component' meant for producing babies in means of keeping the human race alive. Sayaka Murata used Natsuki's idea of aliens and factories as an allegory that alludes to the rejection of conformism.

Along with a few other characters who also see themselves as aliens, Natsuki tried ridding herself of her humanity / emptying all things that made her an 'earthling' from every crevice, which all raises the question we see on the back of the book "how far would you go just to be yourself?".

'Earthlings' is extremely thought provoking and raises ethical questions about society's demands of people and their trauma , how it has been commodified by society that birthing a child has become some sort of antidote for unhappy couples/women, how relationships were judged upon intimacy rather than the sense of company, etc.

This movie is intense, scary, and jumpy but fun to watch with others. The psychotic character was after a Def girl and her Def mother, he was trying to kill them because they were the only ones who knew that he was the murderer at many crime scenes. The psychotic killer was trying to kill the mother and the daughter, he found their house address and the only sad thing is that she couldn't hear any noise that the killer could make, which means that the killer has a bigger chance of breaking into their house without her knowing. The girl in the picture is so strong and brave, Near the end of the story, she stabbed herself in front of the killer in public, and she accused the killer of stabbing her in the stomach. Everyone in public believed her, the cops showed up. In the end, the mother and daughter were safe and the psychotic killer was shot many times until he was dead. The only impressive thing about he movie was that all of this happened in one night, with was midnight.

I really enjoyed reading a narrative book called "Wonder". What gets me interested in that book is because of the plot. The main character (august) was born with a severe facial difference--that prevent him from going to school because people would treat him differently. I find this book unique because people usually don't really talk much about disability because it's sad and rare so to put it in a children's book, really just bring it back to reality since most children's books I've seen so far don't talk much about that stuff. Another reason why I like this book: it leaves a moral in the story. It teaches us to let us make our own decisions and do what we want to do without being afraid of what others might think of us.

Everything Everywhere All At Once is one of the most breathtaking movie I have ever viewed in my whole life. The cinematography and storyline was absolutely extraordinary. The whole story is about Evelyn Wang life as a family immigrant and her struggles to fit in with the American lifestyle. Her daughter on the other hand, Joy Wang live a very americanized life and that put a difference between her and her mothers life. Living in the shadow, Joy showed signs of depression from her mothers neglect as well as stress from her mother acceptance of her life. It also show the struggle of Evelyn and her husband Waymond relationship, shows the contrast between them both. Evelyn is feels lost, her life meaning dreading away as she realize her life goals won't ever happen while Waymond is trying to find joy in everything, even if it's meaningless. This story is all about acceptance and love, how life will continue moving forward and even if you don't like it, you have to accept it. It goes more in depth about generational gap, fear of neglect, fear of the future and the story of healing. There are so many other life story in this movie but I liked it so much because of the storyline and how I relate to it. One of the most beloved comedy-drama show that made me cry 3 times (or more).

This is a series on Netflix that showcase a girl born with great power. It started of with a young girl born from an experiment allowing her to develop a power which they called telekinesis. She was put into this world to create a barrier and stop creatures from the upside down from coming to her own world. With the help of her friends, they work together to find the gate to the upside down and try to close every single one of it. The reason why i love the narrative of this series is because this series have a mixture of fantasy, horror, comedy and a little romance which balance out the whole plot. The plot was great in general because it shows a lot of interesting characters and issue. Not only that but throughout the whole series of this show, I really love some of the characters as they show a lot of character development from good to bad and from bad to good. the plot isn’t boring at all since there is so many plot twist happening. The setting was creepy but also very cool as they are able to recreate such a cool setting especially for the upside down. Besides that, another reason this is a good movie or series is that it shows a lot of bonding, friendship and also friends working together. Thought out the show, the characters there would off go on mission together and investigate together while helping each other to finding more clues. It strengthen their bonds and show a lot of chemistry.

The narrative made this a good movie by adding all the actions and everything that would attract someone’s eye if they likes watching action movies, not only that the narrative made the poster of the movies looks very interesting. The narrative made the detective or the main character interesting by keeping him mysterious since the narrator didn’t mention the detective background and it makes it even more fun when the narrator adds a chinese gangster for the detective to chase and capture him, this makes the movie more interesting to see if the detective successfully captures the chinese gangster or not.

A narrative I loved watching is Serial Experiments Lain. The story starts with the main character, Lain, finding her friend that committed suicide telling her via email that she is not dead but has "abandoned her physical self" and is alive deep within the virtual realm of "the Wired", where she claims she has found "God" there.
From this point, Lain is caught up in surreal events that see her diving deeper into the mystery of "the Wired". The reason why I love this anime is that the story is deep, well thought out, and very entertaining throughout. It also goes about presenting its story, not through exposition or any real dialogue, but instead through symbolism and visuals as it explores themes of consciousness, perception, and the nature of reality.

I like this kdrama because it's really fun to watch and the plot twists were great. There's a lot of truth uncovering and revenge. It involves law professors and law students working together to uncover the truth to find each other innocent. I also really liked the characters as everyone has a background story of their own. They suspect each other but also end up trusting each other again. The moment you think the killer was one character, it shifts to another. Overall it was very well planned and everything felt very real. I think that the characters were very relatable and it mentions real life problems that people have to go through and it really gets you emotional.

A narrative that I consider is best would be the drama "Move to Heaven" because it really got into our daily life of us in reality. This drama show the life of a kid who got Asperger syndrome and how he lived his life with his dad and his only friend and into this drama shows a different setting by it show how he lives without his dad (since his dad got into an accident), and try to go through his days with his uncle that he never know exits, This part of the drama would relate to most kids who lost their parent when they're young and have to live with their uncle or aunty and try to go on with life and remembering every movement that the love one did like what it shows in this drama. And also this drama really shows more into the reality by when the loved one you know has passed away and you have to live with a family member who you never know and also that person can be mean like the uncle who is from the drama but as their days go the uncle tries to understand more over the boy syndrome and try to learn more which everyone should learn from it.

A Manga story from Japan. The main plot of the story is set on creating the world’s best striker to be Japan’s hero in english football. In my opinion I love this story, although a simple plot how the story progresses amaze me. It isn’t simply about training footballers to be the world’s best but rather a survival game to develop players with best man standing to be Japan’s hero. What I like more about this story is it’s toxicity, it’s not just about playing football but each player is told that “In order to become the best you have to think like the best, a person consumed by egoism.” Meaning even if you’re at the bottom you still have to think like the best and that’s how one will start to “evolve.” We see this throughout the series and every time I read it the story just gets better and better. Each character is written so greatly all with their own story, purpose, and set of speciality making each person different and interesting it makes you want to explore every character and it really hooks you on to the story. There are also so much character twists or changes that happen, the writing and timing works so well together to have a good constructed story. One player can be the worst then the best, one can be friends then enemies, but with the point of the story everyone can either work together or be dead set on destroying one another. It’s simply so well written and the story is amazing.

I found the narrative of the movie called "The boy in the striped pajamas" to be really emotional and it show us a lot about the differences between the life of boy who have to live the camps and a boy who live in a lavish life where he had everything he could imagine. It all started in a rich neighborhood with a boy names Bruno who is fortunate enough to be born in wealthy family where his dad is a commandant in the German Army by Hitler during World War II. Him and his family move to the country side, where he was in charge of a prison camp. Before finding out more about what his purpose of moving to the countryside. His family thoughts they move to the countryside because of his father duty without knowing what his actual job is. Bruno like to explore while he is being warned about going to the back of his house where he thought there is a bunch of farmer that work in a stripe pajamas. one day he decided to sneak out and go see for himself he broke out then ran across the field until he came across a boy name shmuel where he thought it is strange for him to be kept behind a fence and work while he suffer from many things such as long hour laboring and little to no food to eat. Bruno is interested and wanted to see what is going on inside he tried to sneak in the camps many time to see what is inside for himself. After many attempted coming back home with disappointment he saw a video inside the camps where people live happy life but little did he know all of it was a lie. It is his dad who tried to convince the outside world about the reality of the camps. One day he successfully sneak inside but unfortunately it was the day where they have to clear out the prison the prisoners is being push to inside the chamber where they will be suffocate with gas. Bruno and Shmuel was in the chamber and later on suffer together and die. His family found out he was missing they search everywhere but couldn't found it when they found out it was already too late. I feel like this movie shows us a lot about one mistake can lead to the lose of his son.
