"Mundane viewers often wish to avoid what they see as the taint of fandom... on the other side of the line, fans may argue about what characteristics allow someone to cross it and become a true fan, but they are clearly agreed on the existence of the line," (Fiske, 1992, p. 35). Thus, there is the idea that there is a sharp contrast between being a fan and being obsessive.

"I’m sorry for every single thing you had to gave up, for every single thing that ‘fans’ said to offend you, i’m sorry for everything Brendon, I hope you don’t give up on us, the real fans who do respect you.

You’re my hero, sincerely,
a true fan."

In an open letter to Brendon Urie, singer of Panic! at the Disco, the author writes about how they are sorry for the ways in which stardom has affected the life of the singer and the harassment he has dealt with from "fans" that are over-the-top. This is a distinction that even the author sets up within the fandom, not just between those who are fans and those who are not. The author sets up a distinction between "real fans", as in people who seem to have extensive knowledge about the band/band members but do not directly interact with the star to get them to consider their opinions, and those " 'fans' " who believe the singer should accept their opinions on things and believe they have a say in the life of the singer.

This illustrates the idea of boundaries and distinctions within the fan community; that one can be obsessive and disrespectful and another can be loyal and respectful while both are still gaining information about the singer that the singer may not necessarily wish to expose to them. He did not ask for their opinions or involvement in his life, but they became involved anyways. I come to consider this: if the author of the letter was a "real fan", would she be as involved in the singers life as she is? Or is she just as much to blame as the 'fan' because she is digging into the singer's life without his permission?

This is evidence of how fans and even those who are not fans interact with the products produced by the band. This may be on a more aesthetic level, as witnessed in the video when the singer transforms into a demon, or on an emotional level, such as the fan who was in admiration of the singer's vocal range.

This is a fan text that is written to depict the imagined scenario of Brendon adding people to a group text, the result of which is a relationship between Brendon and the exp-guitarist Ryan Ross. This fan fiction is written, but does not have the aim of being used as an educational tool or sold for a profit, it is just a way of enjoyment for the fan, which is why it varies from THROAM. While the text will convey knowledge that the writer has of the band members, it is not meant as a reality and is meant to be understood as an alternate universe, like the Caillois reading asserts comes with play. "All play presupposes the temporary acceptance...of a closed, conventional, and, in certain respects, imaginary universe," much like what is being created here in the fan fiction (Caillois, 1979, p.19).

One of the ways that people interact with the band is through fan fiction. One of the most prominent Panic! at the Disco fan fictions is THROAM, aka The Heart Rate of a Mouse, which has actually become copyrighted and is available for purchase. While the text has become more commercialized, the author originally wrote it with the intention of depicting a relationship between Brendon Urie and Ryan Ross in an alternate universe. This, according to Caillois, falls within the bounds of play because it is "accompanied by a special awareness of a second reality or of a free unreality, as against real life," (Caillois, 1979, p.10). Thus, the author writes the text knowing that it is not true, but it is meant for enjoyment and participation within the fan community because it is a text other fans may enjoy as well.

This is a forum centered around the question ""I Don't Like X Because of the Fandom;" Why?" which I felt was an interesting question to address because it deals directly with these distinctions we are making between the obsessed fan and the casual fan. One entry in particular states "Just because you watch/read something doesn't mean you have to partake in fan activities." which is interesting to consider when thinking about why people even consume certain media. Can they actually see it/consume it without being at least in some way integrated into the fandom? Is it exclusionary to say if they don't like the fandom, they can chose not to be part of it? What if the fandom itself if problematic?

This video is an example of the artist being aware of what fans would be interested in, and thus making a work that is of interest to them for them to consume. The video is of Brendon Urie telling the history of the band Fall Out Boy, because the FOB fandom and the PATD one are in very close contact (it is almost like you can't have one without the other because the bands are also so close personally in real life). Brendon does it while drunk, which is also meant for humor. This video was made because the two bands were on tour together, so it was a good opportunity to produce something the fans would enjoy, which is something the two bands have always tried to do.

"Turkle was critical of some people’s attempts to use fictitious identities to harm others, but she also highlighted that much could be gained from the process of self-reflection that was enabled when people had to act out or work through their identity in order to make themselves present in virtual worlds," (Boyd, 2014, p. 36-37). This relates to ideas of how fans interact with each other through their portrayals of band members in fan fiction, which some may agree with or while some may see as problematic or offensive. Writers have an identity not only as a writer, but as an interpreter of events among the band members that is not done for profit, but is still meant to entertain (and sometimes convince) others in the fandom.

When people are seen as obsessive, they are often encouraged to be silenced and to hold their opinions to themselves because they are discredited due to their extreme interest in a subject.

The Buckingham questions this addresses relaing to production are "Who makes media texts?" and "What technologies are used to produce and distribute media?" Often times, tumblr is a good source for fan medias to circulate because of the range of media able to be uploaded, including texts, photos, audios, videos, etc. These medias are often produced by fans, since the website is very much a website to find others who are interested in the same subjects and talk about your similar interests. Thus, anyone is able to produce media. However, popular media about a certain subject is mostly circulated amongst the group itself and becomes popular within that specific sphere, not the community sphere at large.

Production: "Who owns the companies that buy and sell media? How do they make a profit?" Often times, the places that allow for fan expressions are owned by large social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. that are free ways to share information. Additionally, writing websites such as Archive of Our Own or LiveJournal are free for users, but occasionally Archive of Our Own asks for donations so that they do not need to run ads on their website and are able to keep the content free. Thus, the user does not pay for the service, but are able to make donations to keep the service running to the standards they expect. Websites profit by usage and word of mouth about what their websites are good for in terms of fan circles, which bring more users to the website so that they can participate in fan activities.

Language: "How do media use different forms of language to convey ideas or meanings?" While some fans use more formal language to write about the fandom, some are more personal, which depends on the levels of comfort each have in their relationship to the artist, which is interesting to consider because most fans are on the same page in terms of personal relationships with artists, but some perceive that their relationship or understanding are closer to the artist based on their knowledge or interpretations. So, these perceptions are able to be conveyed by media and their interactions with artists not only through what is read, but also interactions on social media (i.e. Brendon responding positively or negatively to a fan on twitter).
