Reflection Questions: How are students utilizing focus notes in your classroom? How do you know how effective these are? FOR NON-CLASSROOM EDUCATORS: How are students using notes in conversations with you (for class scheduling, asking about colleges, etc.)? How are you encouraging them to write things down? FOR SLC / TAP: What writing and/or symbol/meaning recognition strategies do you find success with? What can these look like in your classroom? by Emily Yasonia-Hendricks

Students typically use focused notes 2-3 days a week in the classroom. These notes are effective because students can refer to them during assessments. While I model the note-taking process in class, I allow students to choose their own note-taking structure. Occasionally, we redirect questions to previously taken notes. By having students take notes during instruction, they actively engage with the content, facilitating the transition from mental awareness to physical action. This repetitive process helps them better retain and understand the material, leading to improved comprehension and success in class.

In my classes, students use focused notes/Cornell notes as an active strategy during direct instruction. I am very intentional with identifying ideas, concepts, vocabulary, main ideas that they can use in the left hand column and focus on understanding within the notes section. After the lesson, there is reflection time in which students can briefly summarize the learnings down in the bottom section. Notes are subsequently used for daily assignments, assessments, and reading guides.

Students get into the "copy what the teacher wrote" without understanding or even looking at the notes again . I take the time to teach kids how to use them in the classroom, giving time to go though phases 2, 3, and 4 so they can use FNT in other classes.

My students use focused notes to keep track of sizing and fit for jewelry, namely rings. Most of their notes have numbers, equations, and notes about whether or not a piece needed to be stretched or is too big. Notes are kept in their personal drawers and referred to. Notes for their ring projects are VERY important....no one wants a ring that does not fit.

Referring back to the notes to review previous lessons is invaluable as this promotes quicker recall for launch into the lesson at hand. Although there is no documented data, it seems clear that referring back to notes taken has a positive effect.
