Him and his friends took a 2 week trip to Florida to have 'fun'. They were old enough to drive and go wherever they wanted to. So his friends thought it'd be a great idea to go to places where alligators/crocodiles were popular. Yes- one of them 'played' with an alligator before Jam decided to do the same. 

We don't know much of the story, but I'm assuming they pressured him; Jam thought it would be a bad idea. And although he refused the first time, he might've hesitated and agreed to it the second time. 

What we know is that Jam got bitten; most of his friends ran but then came back; and before they could retrieve his body, he died.
