It was a moment where there was cooperation towards the new territories ideologies would be dispersed between Northerners and Southerners, yet both sides have strict beliefs of their own lifestyles and want to be able to expand those beliefs (on slavery) without limitations. Even after new territories being split up in an attempt to satisfy both sides, they still wanted more and South thought they were entitled to more than their share. The effect of this compromise which was intended to be cooperation and equal ground for both sides started a more internalized system of sectionalism. Each side wanted expansion and power, and so their minds were fixed on their own mindset of the morality of slavery. These sets of laws were established after seeing the escalated tensions between the South after the Compromise of 1850. These laws were insurance in which runaway slaves could no longer seek safety and a new life in the North. Southern slaveholders now had the ability to use this to forcedly enter the North and take them back. Some  free black people were taken even if they were free since there is no proof of freedom. North does not like the Southerners  taking advantage of this power, or even having it at all. North used all this rage to fight back. As for the secession of the Southern states, it was temporarily at a halt as they saw themselves above the North. Things would change as the power hungry greed of the South grows and the Slave act would not be enough.. and as the North prepares to fight back. 
(The North was probably more united than ever and created an even bigger wall of sectionalism, and tensions kept rising.)

This Northern attack in the South was an indicator of the pent up rage the North has had, this time just expressed physically. This attack empowered the North while making the South's eyes open to the option of secession and to make a bloody comeback. As this attack came to a close, South had made a decision to never be a subject to target again. This also escalated the tensions of the upcoming presidential election, where the Civil War's fate would be sealed. 

(Also, John Brown an abolitionist who swore God spoke to him about using violence to free the slaves in the South shows an obvious difference in religious beliefs between North and South interpret slavery.)
