Jigsaw - Developing your PYP framework: Early years by Kelsey

Read your assigned section with the following questions in mind: How do early learners learn best? What are the conditions for learning? What changes could be made to the diagram of an early learner? Reflect on what you have read and please choose a way to show what you have learned. Use creative thinking to demonstrate your learning of how young children learn best. You can choose to:
create a visual, write a song or poem or
do a skit.

This occurs because play activates the cognitive process and social engagement necessary for these skills to develop and mature."

- I think this quote sums up the idea of play perfectly. Play provides the opportunities for skill development in every area.

- I think about my Grade 2's I am teaching this year. They missed many learning opportunities in Kindergarten as they were learning online. For the most part, my class is a very strong group of readers (because they had many one to one learning opportunities with their parents). However, their social skills and play skills are where I have had to focus my attention. Their group work, problem solving independently and many other social skills have required my attention this year.

- It proves how valuable a play based problem is to our young learners.

I've found for ATLs, modelling has come up very frequently in the documentation, which seems obvious, but may be easy to forget - Young Learners will always look to the teacher for the prime example, so we need to be the paragon of ATLs.

We've been asked at our school to 'explicitly teach' the ATLs, which to be frank I feel is artificial, at least when it comes to EY students. You can only pre-empt so much of what will occur, but an argument or conflict between students can be a great teachable moment that everyone can learn from and reflect on.

Again... sorry for the abysmal pics.

A sense of self-efficacy is developed when learners take an active role in their education. Learning opportunities should be provided to support learner agency. Flexability can be incorportated in daily scheduling and learning spaces to support ownership of learning.
