Everyone has a part to play in achieving a goal, and assessment requires us to work alongside our students to get there. Ultimately, it isn't about checking boxes - it's about the process of getting to our end goal.

When I think about assessment, this is the first picture that comes to mind. I had seen it by chance on social media one day after learning about Differentiated Instruction as well as Assessment FOR, AS and OF learning. To me, this picture completely reinforces the fact that we teach so many different students and we cannot expect them to all complete one evaluation or assessment and consider it to be "fair". One evaluation style does not allow all students to accurately demonstrate their learning, understanding and knowledge. We must be mindful of this and constantly be changing our forms of assessment, and tailoring feedback for every individual to meet their unique needs and styles.

I want to compare assessment to a growing plant because they are like learners grow at their own pace with someone providing providing safe environment and care. After days, months, or years of nurturing, plants can withstand the weather and be on their own. When I think of assessment, I think of it as a measurement of the accomplishments of the learner that has meaning and significance to them and something that they can utilise or guide them in their daily lives. Assessment is not just knowing or memorizations of facts or contents they learned.

I think of assessment as a toolbox. A toolbox to learning and growing. There is no one specific way to do an assessment, there are many types of assessment, just like the different tools that exist in a toolbox. To me assessments is not only about the teacher evaluating the students, but it is also about peer and self evaluation. In addition, there are formative and summative assessments as well. There are different ways to assess a student's understanding whether it is done orally, or through a written test. Similar to when building something, there are many tools involved to complete a task.

I would liken assessment to a quilt because it is about a learning journey where we piece various forms of assessment as we go along. Each square can be different much like the types of assessment we use. We cannot assess or evaluate a student based on one mark but based on judging multiple pieces of work, which will be put together to create a final grade either for the unit or report card.

Assessment to me is a process that involves constant feedback in order to alter an action (the way we go about learning) to achieve a task. In the nervous system, the brain constantly gives feedback to the hand to grab something. The hand, eyes, etc, five feedback to the brain to alter the movement in order to grab the object. If done several times the feedback can help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the movement. This is how I view assessment. Assessments come from both students and teachers and allow the classroom as a whole to achieve or improve on a common goal. In the process learning occurs.

To me assessment is both for the student and the teacher. In this picture, we see students' hands being raised. To me, this is what an engaged set of classmates that are eager to learn looks like. Assessments are feedback for a teacher on whether what they are teaching/ method is working or if it should be improved for student success. For the student, assessment gives them feedback on planning their new steps or learning goals.

For me assessment is a checklist. As a student I always tried to understand how points were divided and what I needed to do/write/say to show that I understood what was required from me. As a teacher, I still look at evaluations as checklist but it's a much longer list! I need to consider the end goal of the evaluation, the different type of questions, the overall fairness of the evaluation, the preparation (lessons, scaffolding, previous evaluations), the curriculum expectations, the feedback, student's potential.... All of these factors come in when I am planning or marking an evaluation.

The fine strings of assessment are woven carefully and thoughtfully to engage students to look beyond it, yet also catching it it's delicate strands the pieces of insecurity or "not yets" which may still linger. Regular, effective assessments help to catch student uncertainty or confusion to better allow the mind and imagination to create an interconnected picture of what we are hoping students will learn.

To me, puzzle pieces represent the connection between the lessons and the student -- ensuring that students are making the proper connections and being able to apply the material.

Assessment for me is just a journey to get to the destination. The assessment shouldn't be "the end goal". I see assessment as a path to the top, a process. Many teachers use and view assessment the wrong ways and that is unfortunate because homework and assessments are suppose to help students grow, and not discourage them. Of course, there will always be outliers in the classroom but as long as we design our assessment with the mindset that this is the take the students to that end goal, then we are off to a good start.

I view assessment as a continuous feedback process that continues to enhance learning. It works like the nervous system. The brain and other areas of the body continuously provide feedback to each other in order to improve actions. The teacher and students continuously provide each other with feedback or assessment in order to improve the learning taking place. It informs their learning.

I think about Assessment as a tool for growth and improvement and that is why I chose this picture of a plant being watered. the hose is out assessment tool and the water is the positive feedback that students get to become better! There are 3 different types of assessment and they all need to be used in order to encourage student success. This sunflower need sunlight as well not just water.

Assessment is a feedback!!

Purpose of assessment is not judgement. For me it’s more like a feedback to the teacher of what has been taught by her. It gives the teacher an idea of what learning goals have been achieved by the students, which she formulated at the planning stage. This type of feedback will help her teach better.

So for me assessment is “a feedback by students’ on her accomplishments’ of the intended learning tasks”

This picture reminds me of the growing success readings. Assessment is to support learning and helping them reach the end goal. We do this frequently and by providing descriptive feedback during the learning processs. Evaluation is where we look at what they are capable of and make a judgement (grade).
