Just as the world changes, we do as well. I wonder if we will ever fully know ourselves? Our present truth might be different from what it was a year ago. Our perception of memory is very delicate, as it can be manipulated very easily. Our experiencing self may also alter reality to what will seem more pleasing for the remembering self. As time passes by, our brains will fill with newer and more complex information for us to process. Knowing one's self is a journey that never ends. I see it as a fusion of small moments and decisions that make up who we are. Through time, we have been taught what is right and wrong which has shaped our values and responsibilities as a person, as a result of these experiences our personal identity is created. Still, I wonder what makes each person unique? We are technically composed of the same thing, elements. It is very interesting to see how different people dominate different areas of their brain and how this impacts our decision-making. If you are left-brained you are more analytical and methodical in your thinking, while if you're more artistic or creative in your thinking you are considered right-brained. Due to this, we are subject to cognitive bias in our reasoning and thinking processes. I believe that through life we get to know different areas of ourselves, from the most vulnerable to the most resilient parts of ourselves. And at the end, we are able to finally understand who we are as a person and truly appreciate who we are.

Religion

It is undeniable to say that religion impacts our life significantly, sometimes for some more than others. Since I was little, I have identified as Catholic when someone asks about my religion. It is almost instinct, it feels as if it is part of myself. Even though I question my religion and sometimes don’t agree with everything stated in the Bible and the church, I do believe in right and wrong and that we are responsible for the consequences of our actions. The image that I have chosen to include is during my confirmation ceremony at church. It is one of the rites of passages that you need to complete in order to confirm to the church that you are a member of it. I believe that this event shows the power that the Catholic Church has in my life and how through time it has shaped my personal identity. Due to this big presence in my life, I am also prone to bias as I tackle situations based on the values that I have been taught from a young age that have been influenced through my family and implemented into my life by the church.

The influence of family

I have always been taught that family is the most important thing in life, and we should cherish it. Certainly, most of my beliefs and values have been influenced by my family, shaping my group and personal identity. My perspective on controversial topics can also be influenced by this. However, I have learned that I interpret situations differently than my parents or my grandparents. Each person has their own way of thinking and justifies actions with different means. I have also learned how culture influences our family, which in turn influences me as an individual. Having my grandparents from Italy and Spain has shown me that they have more western influence than myself as I have grown up in Peru, they are much more proper and traditional from their way of talking to dressing while I talk with much more colloquial words. Still, their way of expressing themselves has an influence on me, which shows the influence of the people surrounding you.
