Traylor would rely on allegory for his safety. His drawing/painting would be on very heavy, serious subjects that would depict what he and other former slaves went through. To cover it, in order to not get "in trouble" with the public, he would rely on his symbols, colors, and characters to add layers behind the true meaning. To the eyes of the public, his art may seem simple and unmeaningful, but the meaning behind it refers to all his experiences when living as an African American during this era.

Reconstruction was a era of introduce new amendments which in majority affected black americans the most. Thirteenth Amendment, formally abolishing slavery in all states and territories in the United States.the Fourteenth Amendment, guaranteeing citizenship to “all persons born in the U.S including those who had been enslaved. The Fifteenth Amendment, guaranteeing African American men the right to vote. These amendments caused a major shift in the black communities and uprising with Whites vs Black rather whites having full control on blacks. Bill traylor art has a subliminal message about a black man's power and how it is faced with white oppression throughout a lot of his art with his sizing techniqie of figure and his contrast with the color blue, black and red.

(Max C)
a) Traylor's entire childhood was completely surrounded around laboring on a farm. Growing up a slave in the confederacy of the U.S. would form who Bill Traylor was and would go on to affect every bit of his existence, including his art. Nearly all of his works illustrate the life of a slave on a farm and of a homeless black man in Alabama.

b) Traylor would live his entire life around the most dangerous cities to live in as a black in america. This likely molded parts of Traylor's personality and would be reflected in his art.

c) Comparing this new life to his childhood to reveals how his life, almost ironically, changed dramatically in some ways but remained the same in others. As a child, Traylor was enslaved but he had a family to support him. As a freeman, he continued to suffer, now homeless on the city streets. Traylor would lose his family but he still had a support system. His life changed dramatically, but in a way it remained the same.
